Rising Stars: Meet Jovonte Harris

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Jovonte Harris.

Jovonte Harris

Hi Jovonte, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi, my name is Jovonte Harris, but everyone calls me Jr. I’m a professional athlete/mentor/trainer and am now becoming a content creator for the game of basketball that I love so much.

From the game of basketball, I am able to impact many communities and cultures through the game of basketball, showing another outlet with many paths to choose from and mentoring the youth to adolescents about life and any more issues that come up in many community neighborhoods.

It started one day when I told my mom that I was going to be a pro player, which led me down my path and journey to what I have become today. Let people know that whatever you put your mind to, you can achieve – you just have to stay disciplined and consistent and set goals for yourself.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I went through many obstacles, and there were plenty of times when I wanted to quit. My first obstacle was not playing high school basketball. I made the team my freshman year, but I had family issues, stopped coming to practice, and fell out with the coach. Each year after that, the coach didn’t give me a shot to try for the team again.

So, my whole high school career, I only played soccer my senior year once I found out we had a soccer team at my public school. I almost got goalie of the year but missed the first two games because I started late with the team and never played soccer a day in my life. I played street ball every day in many different neighborhoods in my city, from east to west and north to south. Once high school was over, I wanted to play in college, which was my next obstacle since I had never played organized basketball or played for my high school team or AAU.

College at my time didn’t respect that, so I had to try to walk on to a school. I tried out for three schools, and I got denied for the first two. I made it for the third school I tried out for, and also made it for their college football team. Once she made it to college, it was all she wrote about, but there were many more obstacles that came about during and after college.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My work currently consists of training the youth, making content, and mentoring others, from kids to adults. Most of the time, everyone knows me as a professional athlete and trainer.

One of the things I’m most proud of is being able to give back my knowledge to others that god blessed me with through the journeys of my life. What sets me apart from others is my character and the heart I have for helping others and wanting to see others succeed in whatever dreams or goals they have for themselves.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share?
Yes I learned a lot from the Covid-19 crisis, it made me have to change the way I went about helping people or even training people because of the restrictions made in gyms and places of allowing a certain amount of people to be in there location.

This taught me new ways to interact with clients and mentor the youth and adults through Zoom, WhatsApp, and even FaceTime.
