Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Guel.
Hi Monica, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I’ve always had a love for secondhand sourcing. I started by shopping for myself, filling my closet with clothes, and decorating my home. I have been thrifting all my life. My mom would take my sister and me since we were little girls, and I’ve grown to love it.
Now I get to pursue my dream job. I love sourcing for others; it always warms my heart when people shop at Mio Vintage because it means we share a similar style and appreciation for vintage fashion.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth ride. I started Mio Vintage last year, in September 2023, in a new city where I didn’t know anyone. My husband and I moved here a little over a year ago from Houston, TX, and immediately fell in love with the whole vibe of the city.
I have always wanted to be involved in the vintage scene, but I was unsure of how or where to start, so I began applying to as many vintage markets until I finally got a bite and I have been hooked ever since. As far as obstacles go, I would say that getting turned down by different markets can be discouraging, but you just have to keep your head up and remain persistent. I still have so much to learn and a long way to go to get Mio where I want.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Mio Vintage is Latina-owned. Bringing a little Tejas flare to Tennessee. We specialize in show casting unique vintage wear, western-inspired, gender-neutral, 90s style, and a touch of Y2K. Mio Vintage’s curated collection offers sustainable pieces that are unique and exclusive. We are proud to offer size-inclusive and affordable vintage items in our shop.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up.
As a kid, my mom would take my sister and me to our community thrift store every Saturday. I always remember being so excited to go and running straight to the toys section. I grew up shopping at that thrift store and continued to do so throughout my high school days to adulthood. It’s how I fell in love with buying second-hand. Every time I visit Texas, I make sure to stop there
