Meet Nia Morris

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Nia Morris.

Nia Morris

Hi Nia, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I have been in the bar industry as long as I’ve been able to drink! For three years, I’ve had the opportunity to explore the craft side of making cocktails; using science and mixing different flavor profiles to curate different-tasting cocktails has become a passion of mine.

From studying to learning tricks from other bartenders, I am now on the right track to launch my own bar program full of fun, interactive, and off-the-wall cocktails that offer a level of gastronomy and bold flavor.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The hardest part of bartending is the failure. You work so hard to push out a cocktail that you think will be a hit, just for it not to work out in the slightest.

But that failure is fuel to try something new, to manipulate variables, and not give up completely on one cocktail when there could have been just a few ingredients that needed to be tweaked.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe you can tell us more about your work next?
Every day in my job as a craft bartender, I get to take ideas from my guests and clients and use them in their drinks. Getting to be creative on a daily basis through drink-making is fun and challenging. Just last year, I got to put my bar skills to the test and enter my first competition.

The cocktail I entered was a well-rounded cocktail that appealed to the sense of sight, smell, taste, and touch. Given my hard work to create this cocktail, I was able to win the first bartending competition I ever entered. It is very rewarding to know that your efforts and creative nature finally paid off.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those just starting.
Getting started in bartending is hard but not impossible. The best way to learn is by jumping in the deep end and starting kicking. Jump into an entry-level bartending gig, learn the basics of bartending from the people around you, master the classics, and then jump into craft cocktail bartending.

The bar industry isn’t something you can learn by taking classes or going to school for it. Get in the field, make the drinks, MAKE MISTAKES, and KEEP TRYING. It’s a repetitive nature; you’ll only learn if you keep making the same drinks over and over again!
