Today we’d like to introduce you to Riley Hudson.
Hi Riley, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
For as long as I can remember I have loved the art of filmmaking. I always enjoyed studying a movie to see which shots or camera techniques the cinematographer would use and implementing them into my own work. I got started by making small videos whenever I traveled to recap my trip.
I fell in love with the art of videography and with that, I wanted to make bigger videos and to create movies. I met some incredible student filmmakers last summer and working with them has helped me get to where I am today.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road hasn’t always been smooth. There were times when my ideas weren’t taken into account or just disregarded altogether. There have also been times when communication wasn’t prioritized. It’s important to take a step back and breathe when these situations arise.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a cinematographer on the rise. I specialize in camera work and how the project looks visually. I also specialize in film photography, and my knowledge of both helps me come up with unique shots.
I feel like I’m known for my work on The Bell Witch Project which premiered in October 2023, and that’s what I’m most proud of. It was my first film project that was published and we all worked so hard to make this vision come to life.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
There are a few books I’ve read that have helped me with my work, some of them being: Studying Film by Nathan Abrams, Ian Bell, and Jan Udris and Cinematography by Kris Malkiewicz. What helps me the most is studying other cinematographers and their films. I watch the film and determine which shot style they used and if I feel like it was fitting for the tone of the scene/film.
