Today, we’d like to introduce you to Ajani Da Homie, formerly known as Ras Wiz.
Hi Ras Wiz, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always had musical talents as well as creative writing skills. I began rhyming at the age of 9 when I teamed up with my cousin to form the duo we called Wan+Twan. We would write childish yet creative songs and record them on a tape player. I later released “The Dawn of Dawan” in 10th grade, and despite the low quality, my classmates still rocked to it.
As a duo, we later summoned the aliases of TKO and Cashus Clay the Gr8 to form the short-lived KnockOut Kingz, under which we released the five-song EP, Round 1, which was very well received by the local public. The two eventually somewhat split, and I tapped into my Rastafarian culture to be once again reborn as Ras Wiz, or Prince of Wisdom.
I released lots of music under this moniker and can be found on all streaming platforms as Ras Wiz. I have recently rebranded myself again under a more inclusive image of Ajani Da Homie with more of a business structure behind me and have released two songs thus far from JAM Records LLC through my publishing company SolMuzik & Media Publishing.
I’m currently working on releasing a project called “Break The Sky” and hope to make more deliberate steps in making an impact with each release. This journey is continuous, and success is WITHIN the process of the journey, as well as shortcomings and lessons learned.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has never been smooth, but I also didn’t expect it to be. A lot of struggles come from a lack of information, and that lack sometimes breeds inconsistency.
Some spans in time calls for more attention on tangible things, and in reality, most people don’t see music as a tangible career until they get some opportunities to start piling up, so it’s a constant battle of self-worth, staying consistent and being encouraged along the way.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in creative expression through songwriting and music. I am known for my vibey yet lyrical hip-hop style. I am most proud of establishing Dewand T. Clay Professional LLC and being able to stay the course.
On a path that many wash out of. I always get motivation from random people who may notice me in public and say, “I know you. I saw you perform at…” I feel like the thing that sets me apart is the way I am able to make my OWN style of music no matter what’s going on in the hip-hop climate.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I’ve definitely had support. Mostly my family and friends who noticed my commitment early on. I’ve also run across and developed relationships with fellow creators who have always urged me to stay at it and that I have high-quality content good enough to break through.
Working with my brother, Sir iLLington, has always been inspirational to me since it keeps me in touch with my musical and familial roots. I’ve always played back the compliments and encouraging words I’ve received over time in order to keep me going.
My biggest motivator is my late Nana, who always encouraged me to use my voice and to do it with the purpose of bringing more love into the world. My other motivator is a friend and colleague who goes by Invader Kasso, who recently got his first 1 million streams on his last release entitled “Wrisky,” and it rejuvenated my approach.
