Inspiring Conversations with Charlie Eblen of Single Tree BBQ

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlie Eblen. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Charlie Eblen

The idea for Single Tree BBQ was formed many years ago on a farm in Bell Buckle, Tennessee, owned by “Papa” George Eblen, founder Charlie Eblen’s grandfather.

The days were filled with hard work tending to the cattle, working in the garden, fixing fences, and everything else that needed to be done on a farm. After a long day, everyone would spend the evenings together telling stories and cooking dinner, usually by the outdoor fireplace. During this time with family, laughter, and love, the connection between food and community became clear to Charlie.

After more than 25 years in the restaurant industry, Charlie decided it was time to start his own brand where he could share his amazing BBQ skills while also building community. He partnered with Brent O’Dell to begin this unique brand in 2020. It was only fitting that the name of this company would be Single Tree BBQ, after the name of the farm where it all started.

In 2023, Single Tree decided it was time to branch out from the roots of catering and food truck operations and expand into their first brick-and-mortar location in Murfreesboro, TN. With a mission of building community through undeniable hospitality, storytelling, and the perfect plate of BBQ, we are proud to be a part of the amazing Murfreesboro, TN, community!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Starting a business is never easy. There are a lot of hours worked and challenges to overcome. But we have an amazing team that helps us overcome any obstacles we come across!

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about Single Tree BBQ?
We are on a mission to become the Nike of BBQ.

We want to help, build, and grow our community through undeniable hospitality, storytelling, and the perfect plate of BBQ. We believe that we have a responsibility to impact our community in a meaningful and positive way every day.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
In 2020, during the pandemic, I lost my position with a large restaurant company. I then spent weeks looking for a new position without any success. The world was in a panic, and companies were not looking to hire any new people; most companies were still laying people off.

My wife told me to start my own company and stop depending on others and start depending on myself! So, I took the risk and started Single Tree BBQ. Now, we sit here three years later with a food truck, restaurant, and podcast.
