Today, we’d like to introduce you to Adriana Castro Garcia.
Hi Adriana, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I’m a full-time art teacher at a private school, and I love my job, but I knew I wanted to do something for myself that would bring in extra money. I wasn’t finding anything that fit into what I loved to do, and after some thought, face painting made sense. I did some research to find the best paints and brushes I could and made it happen.
At first, I just told friends, but their kindness helped a lot because they told others, and word of mouth has been how I’ve met almost everyone I’ve painted for. I originally started before covid but obviously had to pause for a while, and luckily, people were eager to allow face paint back, and I was able to pick it back up after some time. Now I do it almost every weekend!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve always been an artist, but painting on faces is definitely different; it’s taken some practice, but I’m confident in what I can do now and how quickly I can do most designs.
I’m located in Murfreesboro and once when I first started, I got hired to paint in Nashville, I got so caught up making sure I had everything I needed that I forgot my PAINTS. (Husband had to come to the rescue). It was so embarrassing, and I had to adjust their time, but it was so devastating and really just a reflection of how overwhelmed I was.
I’ve learned a LOT since then, and I do my best to leave my clients happy and all the kids smiling. It was not a smooth road in the beginning, but it is way better and so easy now. Since then, though, the roughest thing I’ve come across is having the occasional child sneeze in my face while getting theirs painted!
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a full-time art teacher at a private school in Murfreesboro. I teach art to kindergarten through 8th grade! I am heading into my 4th year soon, and I love my school and what I do. I am very blessed to have lots of wonderful little artists to teach!
Face painting is my side hobby, and I like to think I’m more price-wise accessible to families than most face painters. When I started, I did some research to see what the average price for face paint was, and I was kind of shocked. I wanted to be accessible to everyone and give every child the opportunity to have something fun and magical at their parties!
I would like to be able to do more window painting; it’s really fun to do but not something I’ve been hired to do very much!
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
I love working with kids, and I think they teach me as much as I teach them.
I love seeing the smiles on their faces when they see their face painted to match their favorite character or an array of colors. I think we should appreciate the little ones in our lives and remember to enjoy the little things as much as they do.
