Today, we’d like to introduce you to Savanna Hulbert.
Hi Savanna, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My creative writer’s journey began with a passion for storytelling that was simply out of this world! My imagination soared, and my hilarious antics often amazed my teachers. Of course, sometimes, I took things a little too far and got myself in trouble.
Thankfully, my inspiration continued to grow, and in high school, Mr. Rosenberger gave me the creative freedom I needed to explore my writing and reading. As a confessed book nerd, I loved delving into the lives of my favorite authors and discovering all about the artists who brought their stories to life. Seriously, my love for writing knew no bounds!
This allowed me to be in rooms I thought I would never be in. Beyond excelling in academics, I was soaring in community work as well. This inspired my work, seeing different people’s personalities and hearing their different stories. People who look and don’t look like me share similar ideas. I was initially in heaven, having so much to write about.
Let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
Oh, there were some bumps in the road. I lost my passion for writing after a car accident I had; it was life-changing for a bit. I couldn’t trust my hands to not give out while trying to grip my favorite pens and pencils. I couldn’t think of anything other than my red Honda consistently spinning and tires not gripping the ground because the roads were icy.
I had hit a mental block. Before, I could hear a song, watch a movie, do some research, have a conversation, or read a book that would inspire my writing; however, after it all, I couldn’t even pick up a remote, book, or hold a conversation. It took me a year to drive again and two years to find myself creatively again. Honestly, I still think I am finding myself creatively.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar with what you do, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a creative entrepreneur who writes and publishes poetry, romance, fiction/nonfiction, and suspense/erotica novels. I also work as an educator during the day and in the community, advocating for literacy and academic integrity for students. I am the founder of Rhyme N Reasons, a creative organization started in college at Webster University in St. Louis, where artists could come and participate in writing workshops.
I attend open mic events and poetry slams to support the art form. What sets me apart is my ability to fuse different genres and create unique stories that captivate my readers. I am an artist who does not perform my work; it’s strictly focused on social media and published work. I am most proud of the impact I have made on my community through my advocacy work and the inspiration I have provided for aspiring writers.
My love for words and desire to make a difference in the world drives me to continue creating, educating, and mentoring others on their journey to success.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Yes, it is a message from one creator to another.
Dear artists,
We understand that there are times when you may feel discouraged in your creative process, second-guessing your work and your ability to create. However, we want you to know that these doubts are normal and experienced by all artists, regardless of their level of experience or success.
Remember that creativity is not a linear process – there will be ups and downs, moments of inspiration, and moments of frustration. But in these moments of doubt, you have the opportunity to push yourself to create something new, something unexpected, something that will challenge you and inspire others.
Believe in yourself and your abilities. Trust your intuition and embrace your unique perspective. Remember that art is subjective and that your work has the power to impact someone else’s life. So keep creating, keep pushing, and keep believing in yourself. Your art is unique to you, and no one can create it quite like you can.
Sincerely,
Your fellow creative.
