Conversations with John Jo

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Jo

Hi John, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I love photography! I saw the artistry at a very young age. I was obsessed with posters, magazines, baseball cards, and museums growing up. I would wallpaper my room with all kinds of pictures until every inch was covered. A headache to my parents I’m sure, but I didn’t realize then that I was training my eyes to see how some the greatest photographers in history saw. My actual journey into being a photographer came from doing my own promotion in a “hip hop rock” band. I made our merch and flyers, then several other artists and bands started asking if I could do theirs. One thing lead to another, which paid for my first camera, because I was doing everything on my cell phone in the beginning. When I got my camera, I started asking them if I could come to their shows and take pictures. There are many situations that got me to this point, but the main thing I tell people is, I was the guy that always showed up with a camera, and that’s what lead to everything else.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been a pretty smooth road! At first there were no expectations, I was just having fun and whatever came out of it was a bonus. I truly try to keep the same positive mentality, while understanding that this is a business. I can’t believe I get paid to do what I love! I love bringing a fun loving vibe to any event, interacting with people is what I do best, so the fact that I get paid to have fun at an amazing concert or epic event, is all I could ask for.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a true lover of Photography, so I try to combine a wide range of styles in my work. I’m known for capturing moments, rich resolutions, and aesthetics. I’m most proud of the work I’ve done in the community, specifically The Nashville Art Gala; a one of a kind art exhibition designed to bring inspiration and culture to the city. It’s a black tie affair that’s both imaginative and inclusive with the purpose of shining a spotlight on a wide variety of local artists, and also raising funds for youth programming. I think it’s important to be a part of community solutions, and not just one of many people complaining.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I think as long as people need visuals to promote, market, and communicate, there will always be a need for photography. In the next 5-10 years I hope to be in a position to provide real opportunities for others to succeed. I hope the next major shift, change, and trend involves togetherness. We’ve been fueled by so much hate and a horrible atrocities happening in whole world over, it’d be nice to have some peace and understanding. The industry will adjust based on the situations.
