Today we’d like to introduce you to CeCe May
Hi CeCe, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I grew up writing songs and performing and really found comfort in being in a creative space. In 2011 I decided to move to Nashville and lived my dream of songwriting, playing shows and touring. During my time as an artist, I had the pleasure of working with incredibly talented people and learned so much about myself and my craft. It was during this time that I began practicing yoga and that led me to trainings where I eventually became a teacher. Teaching yoga brought me so much joy and at one point in my career I was teaching numerous classes a week. When things came to a halt in 2020 I was forced to take a huge step back from the music industry and my yoga classes. With a lot more free time on my hands, I really dove into my yogic study and my personal practice. With the help of my partner, Kyle, I created an online platform called Yoga With CeCe. It was a breath of fresh air to be able to teach classes and see my students again. Yoga With CeCe evolved into Luna Yoga. I knew I wanted to create a space that was sacred and dedicated to the education of yoga. And now here I am, owner, founder and teacher at Luna Yoga and we are located in the heart of Nashville on Music Row.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like any journey, there are road blocks and obstacles that are meant to challenge and push us. I’ve had many challenges and my greatest one was learning to trust myself and my intuition. There are so many moments throughout my career where I felt hesitant and questioned the next step when I should’ve trusted myself to know what is best for me. Practicing yoga has been a great way for me to learn to listen to my intuition and make decisions from a place of authority. Even though there have been many challenges, I’m very grateful for all of them. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without all of my bad days. I owe so much to my partner, Kyle who encourages me daily to trust myself and listen to my heart. Everyone deserves someone in their life to keep them grounded and I’m happy he’s that person for me.
As you know, we’re big fans of Luna Yoga. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Luna Yoga is a non-heated, Hatha Yoga studio that specializes in vinyasa yoga with a deep emphasis on meditation and pranayama. Our classes are designed to lay the framework for a deeper, more expansive understanding of the self, which leads to personal change. I’m currently teaching vinyasa classes a few times a week at Luna and it’s my favorite part about my day. I love teaching people to trust themselves to move freely and witnessing how it transforms lives on and off the yoga mat.
I’m so proud of Luna and our amazing group of teachers. I believe we have some of the best teachers this city has to offer and their dedication to their own growth and practice really inspires me.
I want folks to know that Luna Yoga is more than a place to take a yoga class. You’ll feel supported, seen and loved when you walk through the door. Whether you are very familiar with yoga or you’re brand new, we offer something for everyone. Come give us a try and see for yourself!
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I’m a Virgo, which means order, check-lists and structure are my bread and butter. Risk taking? Very hard for me. Do I make myself try new things and take risks? Absolutely. One of the biggest risks I’ve taken was quitting my job as a bartender and opening a yoga studio. I was terrified people wouldn’t show up for class and the entire thing would crash and burn. However, I knew that if I didn’t go for it, I would regret it forever. It turns out that the risk was very much worth taking. I hope anyone who is reading my story will feel inspired to take that leap—trust yourself. I do want to point out that I hold great privilege in being able to quit my job and take a risk such as this. I know not everyone has that freedom and I acknowledge that and am grateful for the opportunity I was given.
