Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Lucid.
Hi Greg, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Greg Lucid’s journey into the music business began in Cincinnati, OH, where his passion for music flourished early. While still in high school, he pursued a career as a recording artist and delved into various facets of the music industry, even hosting his radio show at the local high school station. His enthusiasm for music led him to Full Sail University, where he earned a degree in recording engineering. However, midway through his studies, Greg discovered his true calling lay on the industry’s business side rather than the technical aspects.
Determined to achieve a successful career, Greg began interning at a local record company specializing in urban dance and hip hop. This experience solidified his love for the business side of music. Upon graduating from Full Sail, he moved to Nashville to start a paid internship at a significant CCM/Gospel record company. However, the company was sold before he could even begin, leaving him jobless. Undeterred, Greg secured another internship at a startup booking agency, quickly gaining traction with acts like Jars of Clay and Third Day. Greg worked part-time at SESAC, a Performing Rights Organization, to support himself during this unpaid internship while holding a third-shift job at a local factory.
Despite these challenges, he remained committed to his dream. Realizing he wanted a more traditional college experience, Greg enrolled at Asbury University in Kentucky, where he studied media communications with an emphasis on media management. There, he honed his leadership skills, promoted and produced the Ichthus Festival, and started a record company for the organization.
Greg’s dedication and networking paid off when his former internship mentor offered him a job managing the boy band Plus One just weeks before graduating from Asbury. The band quickly rose to fame, winning New Artist of the Year at the Dove Awards and embarking on a highly successful tour. After a year on the road, Greg transitioned to day-to-day management roles, eventually working with artists like Sandi Patty and CeCe Winans, thus launching his long career in artist management.
Today, Greg Lucid is the President of Lucid Creative, a company he founded that has guided the careers of some of the most celebrated artists in Contemporary Christian Music, including Jaci Velasquez, CeCe Winans, Sandi Patty, Mark Schultz, Cindy Morgan, William McDowell, Salvador, Master Illusionist Harris III, and celebrated film composer Paul Mills, among many others.
Greg’s innovative approach to management and marketing has led to significant achievements, such as distributing over eighteen #1 chart-topping projects and winning a Dove Award for executive producing the platinum-selling DVD “Mark Schultz – Live A Night of Stories and Songs.” He also ventured into film production, serving as Executive Producer on “Entangled – For Everything There Is A Key” and as a music supervisor on various movies, including the Luis Palau biopic.
Continuing to explore new opportunities, Greg invested in Cinder Entertainment, a leading faith-based booking agency, and developed the bestselling children’s product line Shepherd on the Search.
Educated at Full Sail University and Asbury University, Greg has served on various Gospel Music Association committees and boards, chaired Asbury’s Alumni Board, and currently holds several key positions at DCC, demonstrating his ongoing commitment to the music industry and his community.
It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Nothing in life ever comes easy. I tell my children that circumstances in life can make you bitter or better. I choose to look at those hard times in life as opportunities to reflect on ways they build my character, leadership, and further development as our struggles lead us to look to something greater than ourselves and for me, it’s my strong faith and trust in the Lord who is the giver of everything.
Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Unpredictable Adventures: Navigating a Career in the Creative Industry
Every day in my career is a new adventure, filled with a diverse range of activities. No two days are alike, from reviewing contracts to spending time in the recording studio, attending photo shoots, and being on the road at concerts. My responsibilities include planning marketing and sales strategies, making distribution calls, brainstorming sessions with authors and artists, attending committee or board meetings, creating music soundtracks for films, strategizing tour routes, shipping and developing new merchandise lines, and launching new products. I take the most pride in my ability to promote Creatives and bring their ideas and talents to the marketplace. There is immense satisfaction in seeing the plans and concepts I helped develop and connect in meaningful ways, regardless of who ultimately gets the credit. While management often goes unrecognized, knowing a manager’s significant role in the success of Creatives makes it incredibly rewarding.
Networking and finding a mentor can positively impact one’s life and career. Any advice?
The most valuable advice I received at Full Sail University came from my instructors, who all echoed a surprisingly simple yet profound message: “When you graduate and start an internship, make sure you make the best cup of coffee possible.” At first, this advice seemed almost trivial, especially given my significant investment to become a world-class recording engineer. However, it soon became apparent that this advice was about much more than coffee.
The underlying lesson was about standing out in any role by excelling at even the smallest tasks. Making a great cup of coffee was symbolic—it demonstrated reliability and attention to detail. If you can be trusted with minor responsibilities, you can be trusted with more significant ones. This mindset applies universally: always make the most of every opportunity and never take it for granted.
Over the years, I’ve supervised many interns and noticed a clear pattern. Those who only do the bare minimum, leaving right at closing time without going above and beyond, rarely get recommended. In contrast, those who seize every chance to distinguish themselves often thrive. When given the opportunity, strive to work so diligently and effectively that your contributions become indispensable.
