Check Out Brent James’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brent James

Hi Brent, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been singing my whole life. My mom liked to sing in the car so I kind of learned that way. I grew up in Frankenmuth Michigan and that’s where I joined my first band and wrote my first songs. After graduation I moved to NYC and played in a post punk band that toured up and down the east coast in a van and trailer. After that I started a band called the Flask with Kenny Olson from Kid Rock’s Twisted Brown Trucker band. We made a super vibey rock and roll record with the legendary Eddie Kramer mixing it out in Los Angeles. Unfortunately some industry things got in the way of that album ever being released. I then started doing my own solo stuff. I feel super fortunate to have a publishing deal with BMG. I’ve been working with the incredible folks out of the Nashville office. I’m still releasing my own music independently and also doing co-writes and submitting my songs with the help of BMG for sync. Steady pushing the rock up the hill as they say.

Here is my BMG bio.

Brent James is a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and vocalist. As an artist he’s appeared on the CBS Early Show and has toured/played shows with The Cadillac Three, Huey Lewis, Dierks Bentley, Daughtry, Eric Church, ZZ-Top, Marshall Tucker Band, Uncle Kracker, Shooter Jennings, John Fogerty, Ted Nugent, Kid Rock, Tesla, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Alice Cooper, Social Distortion, and many others. He signed a deal with Skiddoo Records and released his single “Moment Of Silence” that went in the charts at the Hot AC format. He also penned
“Hurts So Bad But It Feels So Good” with Big Kenny from Big & Rich that spent 10 weeks on Sirius XM’s On The Horizon Show. As a writer, his expanding circle of collaborators
include Sam Hollander, Skidd Mills, Mike Daly, Chris Lindsey Rune Westberg, Drew Ramsey, PJ Smith.
Eddie Kramer, Mike Watt, Chuck Alkazian, Parker Gispert, Jon Stone, Brian Craddock (Daughtry), Big Kenny (Big N’ Rich), Kevin Martin (Candlebox), Rogers Stevens (Blind Melon, Richard On (O.A.R.), and Kenny Olson (Kid Rock). Brent is also a member of the Screen Actors Guild and has a number of film/television acting credits to his name. Additionally, he had a recent Bally’s Sports placement and a Golden Corral commercial collaboration. He is also the radio voice for Boot Country lending his unmistakable vocals to the brand.
Brent was tapped by famed best selling author, Mitch Album, to sing “No No Honey” on his audio book and soundtrack for The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto released on Universal Records.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not a smooth road. I have 2 wonderful kids and an amazing wife. Being away from them is the hardest part of doing what I do. It has slowed down in that regard as far as touring goes so that’s nice. But in the past it was always a challenge we had to overcome. Lack of sleep doesn’t work well for me either. I have friends in this business that were just built for touring. They can be on the road and sleep a few hours a night and be fine. That’s not me! If I don’t sleep, my body and mind just don’t work so that’s been a challenge as well.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I guess I specialize in songwriting. I absolutely love it. It is therapy for me and is an amazing outlet. Musically I think I’m most proud of getting a publishing deal. Working with other writers and creatives has been a highlight of my life. I am constantly writing and listening to people talk. I’m always on the hunt for that perfect turn of phrase that could wind up being a hit song. I’m alway searching for that. Obsessively. Haha!

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
The food! Don’t get me started. So many good places to eat. The least is the TRAFFIC. Although it does serve a good place to listen to my demo’s.
