Today we’d like to introduce you to Avery King
Hi Avery, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I had originally begun my career with Big River Broadcasting in Florence, Alabama. The team over there welcomed me with open arms before I even finished school at the University of North Alabama. 10 years ago, after graduating, I moved to Nashville – without a job I might add – and was quickly introduced to Elise Anderson, who owns Elicity PR. She took me under her wing and I ended up working for her for nearly 8 years. I owe so much to her for teaching me the best practices of publicity and also for giving me the confidence to go out and launch my own firm just over 1 year ago. It’s been a wild ride but I’m so incredibly proud of what my team has accomplished thus far.
Since launching we’ve arranged late night television performances, cheered our clients on at stadium shows, cultivated multiple Grand Ole Opry debuts and have received an overwhelming amount of support from our industry partners. I’m honored to represent this remarkable roster of talent and can’t wait to see what happens next.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Well, smooth is not the word I’d use but that wasn’t because of my business. Eight days after I launched King Publicity, I unexpectedly lost my husband. He was the driving force behind me having the courage to go out on my own. He believed in me enough for both of us. If this past year has taught me anything, it’s to cherish every moment and find joy anywhere you can. However, when that happened, I saw a supportive community around me that I wasn’t prepared for. I have had so many people cheering me on and championing me at every turn. My work has become this wonderful distraction to give me so many moments of peace and tranquility. As wild and chaotic as my schedule can sometimes be – I have gained a perspective I didn’t have a year ago. That perspective has shifted my business, relationships, and overall mindset in ways that have benefitted me more than I could imagine.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
King Publicity is a boutique public relations firm that specializes in building a detailed narrative around an artist and their story. We work tirelessly to build our relationship with the artist and understand them on a deeper level to help navigate what is going to make fans genuinely connect with them. Being able to have a personal relationship with a small roster of clients is what I take the most pride in. This allows us to have the freedom and flexibility to get creative and to explore outside of the box opportunities to garner the best results.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Our industry is changing every day. We’re seeing media outlets shut down and candidly, it’s terrifying but also disappointing. Since the entire point of PR is to get eyeballs on a product, person, etc – we’re being forced to find new ways to make that happen. When people think of press – they immediately think of a written piece of content and that’s not always the case. It’s finding a different and unique way to create more fans of an artist. This could be through social platforms, podcasts, television shows, brand partnership, or a number of other possibilities. In order to create a successful narrative, you must be willing to work all of the angles and easily adapt as these changes continue to happen.
