Today, we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Marie Bard.
Hi Tiffany, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In recent years, my Wall Street career pivoted to a micro-focus on changing the maternity marketplace. My passion for doing so inevitably gave way to Nashville’s only in-person retail store – Bump City Nashville.
With two recent pregnancies (and 10lb births!) my first-hand experience with a changing body and lack of fitting, comfortable or stylish clothing options jumpstarted my desire to design a capsule clothing line that was sold online for many years. Our family’s post-COVID move to Nashville led to the identification of a nationwide crisis of in-person shopping, most notably in maternity and nursing wear.
Today, Bump City Nashville (sold online and in-store) curates the best-in-class maternity brands and products across all shopping categories. Our retail destination engages a deep community to whom we empower and encourage as they transition into motherhood.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey to where I am now hasn’t been easy, but I would not have come this far had I let my setbacks stick. I’ve learned to accept and not overthink the “no’s” but quickly pivot to what the “yes” may be. This has helped me to continue to move forward and build the brand that Bump City has become.
Designing a clothing line presented an array of challenges as the process from start to finish is quite cumbersome. There are many touchpoints and no clear handbook on how to create a finished product. The process of design requires start-up capital, networking to uncover the production process, and patience due to small-run manufacturing setbacks.
Launching a new storefront also takes much tenacity as you learn key products, price points, policies, and procedures as you balance growth. Learning to bring on new employees and trust them with your business is also a difficult adjustment.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I own and operate Nashville’s only in-person maternity and nursing clothing store, Bump City Nashville. At our store, we empower and support women as they transition into motherhood by building a community of resources, products and services that connect through our platform.
I’m most proud of this, as we are more than just a store. We’re a physical place where someone having a difficult time figuring out what to wear or how to feel can come and speak to other women who have gone through something similar. Many women leave our shop feeling a sense of relief and a boost of confidence to carry with them throughout the rest of their pregnancy.
Bump City is also known for our product expertise; we curate the best of the products in the market and are a one-stop-shop for an entire wardrobe – baby shower, bathing suit, photoshoots, work wear, lounge wear, maternity jeans, shapewear, leggings, nursing bras, etc. Not to mention, we carry top fashion brands such as BUMPSUIT, Ingrid & Isabel, and HATCH.
Second to wedding dress shopping, finding the right dress for a baby shower or maternity photos is equally as an important milestone. Signature to our business model, Bump City offers a complimentary styling session in which the expectant mother (the family who are welcome to attend) receives a personalized shopping experience tailored to their everyday lifestyle and event needs.
Women come from far and wide to visit Bump City. We love welcoming mothers from our local communities, business travelers and tourists, and those who drive +2/3 hours from neighboring states such as KY, GA, and AL.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I believe that luck is what you create. You reap what you sow. You never know unless you ask. You seek the positive in every situation. Those are the mottos I live by.
