Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Anderson
Hi Crystal, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I come from a large family. I am number 6 of 7 children so I like to think my calling to this career started before I even knew it. Being the 6 of 7 children you learn how to listen and observe well in order to function well within the family culture. I have always been told I was a caring person even as a child I was nicknamed “sweetie.” With this natural gift of compassion coupled with several years navigating a constantly changing environment as a military spouse I landed in the world of therapy. Due to my unique upbringing and early life experiences I have been able to sit across from my clients and create a space for healing and internal contentment. I received my degrees in professional counseling from Grand Canyon University which earned me a position working at group facility. At this facility I worked with client from all walks of life and levels of distress to create a path forward. This work eventually led me to opening up my private practice to serve my community more effectively. I have created a space for people to work through the constantly changing terrain of their lives. Together with my clients work is done to create or repair their sense of self that allows them to live a more connected life.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road to this profession was anything but smooth. One of the major challenges I had to face was the constant moving due to being a military family. I had moments throughout my schooling, internship and licensing process where I wanted to quit. Due to the several moves I had to constantly check if my progress thus far met the currents states requirements. At least twice I had restart my hours to meet the state required standard even if I was unsure how long we would be stationed in the area with the military. This required tremendous amounts of resiliency and honestly humor to navigate. I am so glad I stuck with it because this has been the most rewarding career thus far.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Sweatshirt Therapist ?
I help people sort through the complexities of life’s many ups and downs that may be keeping them stuck. I operate in an environment that cultivates comfort and connection. I want to get to know the whole you not just the problems that you are facing. Transition can be uncomfortable but it doesn’t mean your therapy has to be too. I specialize in working with teens, eating disorders and common or sudden life transitions. I am known for my relaxed style often signified by my many sweatshirts. I have been so proud of the fact I have created a practice that breaks away from the expected and is more down to earth and relatable. I want everyone reading this to know that there are several types of therapist and practices don’t give up if you haven’t found one that fits you yet. I offer therapy in the Franklin/ Cool Springs area via 50 min session and I would love to connect to see if we can be a good fit or help you find a better fit.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
To those up and coming therapist I want to let you know “yes, it will be hard but it will also be worth it.” Ask the questions! at times it can feel nerve wracking to ask a seasoned therapist questions you may deem ‘dumb” but ask them. Many of us working the field remember starting out and are eager to share. New therapist should use networking events to ask questions to those who may work with populations they may be interested in. Networking events are a great way to get bite sized information about a lot of specialties.
