Today, we’d like to introduce you to Gianluca Magalotti.
Hi Gianluca, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Gianluca Magalotti, and I am a full-time professional bassist for hire, born in Rome, Italy, and am currently based in Nashville, Tennessee. My professional experience as a working musician has expanded over about 20 years and across three different continents.
My academic path has been marked by a full-grade Jazz Performance Degree obtained in 2015 at Conservatorio di Musica Santa Cecilia in Rome, Italy, and another full-grade Professional Music/Performance Degree obtained in 2018 at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts.
These days I keep myself busy working on stage and in the studio for multiple emerging and established singer-songwriters, within the Nashville music scene and beyond.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story. Has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
“It’s a long way to the top if you wanna rock ‘n’ roll!” – some legendary band once said. It’s been tough, as it is, for any art-driven life path. However, at the same time, it has also been the most fulfilling journey. Most of the struggles surely consist of realizing that the chances of making a living out of music do not necessarily depend on your set of technical skills only.
There are so many factors that can be decisive when it comes to landing a good gig that will potentially step up your career. After years and years of music studies and devoted dedication, waiting impatiently to see the light at the end of the tunnel, an aspiring professional musician is given two choices: 1) To let themselves be overpowered by their frustration, impatience, and overall lack of enough self-esteem, which eventually only lead to giving up on their potential music career, as opposed to 2) To believe in the light at the end of the tunnel without being able to see it quite yet, and move on, always pushing for getting better and better, until things happen.
The main issue with today’s world is that we are the slaves of our expectations, but we are becoming increasingly incapable of exercising our self-belief, efforts, resilience, and gratitude when turning our visions into reality. Things won’t happen because of a hidden clockwork that operates towards some inner resolution timing for every person’s life goal, like a digitally programmed jackpot on a slot machine.
On the contrary, things will only happen because of our ability to understand, adapt to, and take advantage of the ever-changing environment in which we are involved.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in serving the music artistry of whoever hires me and trusts my skills through my bass playing, mainly within the live and studio realms.
My background as a bass player lays its main foundations on soul music, but then I am also a huge nerd of analog synth-pedals and appreciate any kind of electronic-based music genres and sub-genres. My technical studies are rooted in the jazz heritage, and my musical instinct resonates particularly well with the pop and rock worlds, as well as with any progressive approach to both harmony and groove experimentation within mainstream and non-mainstream musical environments.
Currently working on building a solid professional reputation in Nashville, Tennessee, and looking forward to serving even bigger artists at the international level.
What were you like growing up?
There are a few features of my personality that I have kept with me growing up. Just to name a few, I believe that calm, curiosity, passion, empathy, determination, and self-control (of course, as a bass player, this one cannot slip out of my list) probably give a solid idea of my overall nature.
I have always been an adventurous, proactive individual since I was a kid, and still to this day, my list of personal interests and things I would love to pursue is just massive, to the point that I struggle to keep up with everything, and I would probably need a dozen more lives so to be able to experience them all.
Knowing myself well enough, I would surely hate a routine-based lifestyle. I am generally more inclined to favor anything that provides me with some sort of stimuli/adrenaline and makes me feel alive. That’s why I get along pretty well with any intense outdoor activity, and obviously with music and the stage life.
At least so far, I’ve gotten to turn my #1 interest into my livelihood, so I am very grateful and feel more fulfilled day after day!
