Meet Lindsey Orrin of Nashville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Orrin

Hi Lindsey, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Flamgu and Doug Ferrari came together in March to start Flamgu +Ferrari, a contemporary design project. We began painting collaboratively in 2022. Our work together started with elements from our own personal works fusing into one. We noticed our style of painting and flow were very similar and that they could compliment each other’s strokes very well. Over two years later, we embarked on a new artistic endeavor. Bringing together our taste for fun, imaginative expressions mixed with a more contemporary tempo to the paintings. Our large scale abstract paintings are meant to incite feelings of joy and playfulness, while engaging the viewer’s imagination.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Working together has been easy and fun. Since our values align and we have the same goals with our paintings, it is easy to critique each other’s work and not take the corrections personally. We believe our paintings carry the ease and delight of our process. Everything gets better with practice. The more we paint and dive deep into our work, we are able to have stronger communication and skillfully plan out our process.

Our creative process is fun for us as we squeeze the paint, mix colors, and turn the music on. Dance, singing and improvisational expressions are at the forefront of our artistic explorations. Our paintings look good when we feel free.

It took some trials to discover how to merge our styles most effectively. In the beginning, we had trouble with bringing our new experimental techniques together. This period was very important for us to learn to experiment with paint outside of our own personal repertoire and learn to work together. We came to a turning point when we decided to cover all the paintings up and start fresh with all that we learned through these beginning trials. We also learned how important communication is to our process. We talk a lot about what works between the layers of painting and how we want to proceed in bringing the piece together.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We specialize in creating large scale, contemporary abstract paintings. We want to create pieces that are soft, feel good, and are imaginative. Many people who see our art say they are “dreamy” and really do make them feel calm, yet uplifted.
Our collaborative process of switching through the layers is very unique. We are proud that we have figured out how to work together effectively to create these paintings. It’s not everyday that an artist can find someone to collaborate with. Creating a personal body of work is already a huge feat and it can be an even greater hurdle to produce works collaboratively. It is rare to see a painting duo work well since artists are very particular with their work and want to be in control. We’ve learned to use the freedom and uncertainty of our collaborative process to our advantage.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
It is a miracle that we found each other to create these paintings together. We give thanks everyday for this wonderful gift we get to express and how we are able to keep painting and sharing our joy with others.

Doug quit his 9-5 job in April to follow through with this vision. Our first debut at the Hendersonville Art Festival in May went very well, which gave us reassurance that we are on the right path. So far, it’s been a journey of faith that keeps us seeking and creating. We pray for the continued success and support from our community to keep us doing what we love.
