Today we’d like to introduce you to Ja’Cee
Hi Ja’Cee, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve been into music in some capacity for the vast majority of my life. From the church choir, being in a music group with a few buddies in high school (two of which have gone on to have very successful music careers), to now running a solo act in country music. I was exposed to country music/rock n roll at an early age by my grandmother, Concia Nell Collins, but I actually fell in love with country music in the early to mid 2000’s after artists like Tim McGraw and Jason Aldean started blending different sounds and genres into country music.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve been blessed to have a pretty good start to my career. I have a great team of people around me and we have access to resources that have been very beneficial at this early stage of my career. If I had to speak on obstacles, one obstacle would be getting the people that knew me before I made country music, to believe that the music that I’m playing for them is actually me singing (hahaha).
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I write and sing a form of country music that blends different genres into the sound. You get all of the normal characteristics and lyrics of a country song, but it’s delivered with more of an R&B vocal. I don’t have a really twangy voice so I’d rather not even try to put on a fake accent and just be myself. I’m known for bringing really energetic performances whether it’s 2 people in the crowd or 20000 people in the crowd. I’m most proud of being able to continue the legacy of so many trailblazers in this musical space. Any success that I have had or will have rests on their shoulders and I hope I’m making them proud. The thing that sets me apart from others is that I’m authentically me on and off stage. There’s no on and off switch about my personality. What you see is what you get. I’m all about having fun. It’s a blessing to be where I am in life personally and professionally and I’m going to embrace the ride and enjoy it while I can.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Being coachable and not having an ego about anything. I watch film on my performances just like an athlete watches film on himself or his opponent. I’m always looking for ways to be better at what I do. Whether it’s better song selection for our sets or longer pauses during a performance to allow my band to be highlighted.
