Daily Inspiration: Meet Luke Harvey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Luke Harvey

Hi Luke, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I always joke that I got into filmmaking because I’m a failed musician. It’s really just that at a time in my life when I didn’t know what direction to go with music, I picked up a camera and started recording. I had friends in bands so I started filming little music videos for them to practice. Then one thing lead to another and now I make all kinds of videos for artists for a living!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like any creative career, it has not been a perfectly smooth road, but I’ve always lived by the philosphy that I’ll just follow where I feel pulled and it’ll all work out. There’s been ups and downs, but as long as I’m enjoying the journey, none of that matters.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I always hate pigeonholing myself by saying I do “this” or “that”, because I’m really just a person who likes to create art with other people that I enjoy and respect. On paper, though, I am a music video director and I run a production company called Mossflower Pictures that specializes in content for artists. We are known for our Mini Music Videos where we focus on creating short form content that feels like a music video, rather than spending the same amount of money/time on a traditional music video. We love this process because it’s more personal, intimate, and is generally more helpful for artists in terms of getting the word out about their music. I think what sets us apart as a company is that I’ve spent years making music videos of all different budgets, so I really spent a lot of time figuring out how to make the creation process more concrete and tangible for artists. Sometimes it can be hard for artists to get clear and specific details on things like costs, timeline, creative ideation, and process. I have spent a lot of time trying to make this all easier and clearer for artists and their team so that they can focus more on the creation of amazing music, which makes everyone’s lives better. What sets me apart personally, I think, is my chill aura. That’s the comment I receive most often: “wow this is the most chill set I’ve ever been on!”

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I think luck plays a part in everyone’s life whether we like it or not. I’m not a very extroverted person who likes to get out there and “create my own luck” as they say, so that’s been hard for me sometimes. Generally though, I think most of my luck just comes from growing up in Nashville where the market to create music videos was already here whenever I was ready to dive in.
