Hi Shauli, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
In 2014, I visited Nashville and was immediately captivated by the city, recognizing it as the ideal place to build a family with my amazing wife and 3 energetic sons. Several year later, during the COVID pandemic, I undertook several home renovation projects, including bathroom remodels and window replacements. During these renovations, I repeatedly encountered issues with the glass companies. Many contractors were hesitant to offer glass services due to their distrust of glass companies, which were often over-priced, generalists selling various ‘tandem’ products like gutters and insulation, or relied on glass subcontractors who lacked professionalism and provided subpar customer service. This consistent frustration highlighted a clear need.

It became evident that Nashville needed a trustworthy family-owned company dedicated exclusively to glass and glazing services. We offer shower enclosures, glass partitions, glass railings and more. Recognizing the opportunity to provide superior service and professionalism, I founded Tennessee Shower Doors, followed by Volunteer Glass & Design. This focused approach has allowed us to excel in meeting the specific needs of our clients with exceptional quality and service at much more affordable price.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting a business is never smooth, and ours was no exception. One of the initial challenges we faced was deciding between using employees versus subcontractors. Each option has its own set of pros and cons, but we ultimately decided that having dedicated employees would provide the consistency and quality we aim for in our services.

However, hiring employees came with its own hurdles. The labor shortage in the skilled trades has been a significant challenge. We are committed to maintaining a high standard of work, which means we conduct thorough drug tests and background checks on all our potential hires. While this ensures we have a reliable and professional team, it also excluded many candidates, making the hiring process even tougher and more costly.

Despite these struggles, we’ve managed to build a strong team dedicated to delivering exceptional glass and glazing services. The road has had its bumps, but each challenge has made us stronger and more committed to our mission of providing professionalism and outstanding customer service.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I believe the glass and glazing industry is expected to undergo 3 significant changes and advancements over the next several years.

First, in architectural trends, the demand for large, uninterrupted glass surfaces and frameless glass designs in both residential and commercial office buildings is only growing, driven by the influx of contemporary architectural trends from out west. Innovations in decorative glass, such as digital printing and laminated glass with embedded designs, is offering new possibilities for aesthetic customization too.

Second, there are some technological innovations happening in glass. Improvements in Insulated Glass Units (found in most home windows and commercial storefronts) will continue, enhancing thermal insulation and acoustic performance. Self-Cleaning Glass is becoming more widespread, reducing maintenance and improving the longevity of glass installations.

Third, energy efficiency is becoming more and more important. The adoption of smart glass technology, such as electrochromic and photochromic glass, is likely to increase. These materials can adjust their light transmission properties in response to external stimuli, enhancing energy efficiency. The demand for low-emissivity (Low-E) glass will continue to rise, driven by regulations and the push for energy-efficient buildings and homes.
