Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Weakley
Hi Hannah, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story starts like so many others– an aspiring artist looking for fulfillment in creativity paired with the unfortunate necessity to make a steady income. So I became an elementary art teacher at the ripe old age of 21 and spent a decade inspiring children to find a love for creating through art. It was a fulfilling and incredible career, but within the last few years, the allure to continue fell weaker (it felt) with each passing day. We all know it’s a thankless, and disgracefully underpaid job. That, paired with the fact that I devoted so much of my youth to this profession, I knew my secret yearning for more was going to eventually overcome the drive to continue teaching.
I like to say that I quit to become a stay at home mom, because that sounds better than “I quit to be a content creator”. But the truth is that becoming a parent does this thing to you, where you wake up one day and realize your life is incredibly short and only you can determine the trajectory of where it’s going. I knew that teaching wasn’t going to fulfill my deepest dreams of sharing my love for home, so I quit after the birth of my daughter– a convenient “reason” in the world of teaching, since kids are the priority after all. I skirted past the waves of judgement from co-workers and parents as I said goodbye to 10 years in the classroom and never looked back.
My love for DIY and home design began during the pandemic. Like so many others, being home for months on end made me realize the joy and peace you can create when prioritizing your most personal space. I quickly turned my focus to learning from Youtube University and fumbling through editing software on my phone. I dabbled in creating content in Instagram but never felt like I could fully commit to because of my day job. I began documenting house projects, murals, commissioned paintings, and anything/ everything I could a few years ago but only for fun and never for *internet fame*.
My account quickly began to grow and I realized for the first time, maybe my secret little dream of creating content might actually be a worthy career.
I thought I would miss teaching because it meant that I wouldn’t be able to inspire others any longer. What purpose would my life have aside from “mommy” and “wife” right? Wrong. I’ve learned that I can continue inspiring others to create through my platform while also educating and empowering others to do the same thing as me.
Today I have the privilege and joy of raising my daughter while also creating art, DIY and home design content on Instagram every day. I am transforming my home, room by room and finding joy in the process. I teach others how to do this too. You can find me on Instagram @hannah_weakley_home
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The hardest part is being brave and stepping away from your comfort zone. We tell kids all the time to be brave, but it’s even harder the older you grow because you are the one telling yourself to be brave and oftentimes no one else.
My first viral video was created on the heels of a miscarriage. I had done some “safe” updates to our bathroom like painting walls and cabinets but I desperately hated our tile floors. So in a somewhat, “how much worse can it get?” mindset, I painted them. The videos went viral, and my page took off. I was grappling with grief but throwing myself into a massive, yet successful project was absolutely the key to overcoming that dark time.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a DIYer and painter. I’ve created artwork for local restaurants like Mojo’s Tacos and I’ve done several large murals in the Nolensville community. I’m most known for being an artist, but I hope to continue growing my presence online and share my love for interior home design and DIY with many others as well. Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Never be afraid to ask for help. 90% of the time people are happy to share their experience and knowledge with you.
Be brave! Life is scary! But scary things are more rewarding when you have the courage to try them. You’ll never wonder, “what if”.
Don’t be afraid to fail. Failing is essential to success. It’s just part of the process. Don’t let fear stop you from following your dreams.
