Hi Mandy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
The story behind my e-commerce business, GERD Health (gerdhealth.com), started when I was a teenager attending middle school in China, specifically in the small city of Liuzhou in the Guangxi province.
In Chinese culture, it is considered impolite to leave unfinished food in your bowl. My adherence to this unspoken cultural rule led to an inability to listen to my own hunger cues.

Over time, a snowballing of bad eating habits—like eating too fast, not chewing enough, poor posture, eating too late, and even, at one point during college, bulimia—resulted in GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disorder). You may also know GERD as frequent heartburn or acid reflux.

Upon discovering this chronic disorder, I consulted medical professionals and was immediately prescribed a PPI (proton pump inhibitor) called Omeprazole. After further research, I discovered that PPIs, the most common treatment for frequent heartburn, are accompanied by a long list of terrible long-term side effects, such as bone density loss and heart disease. It’s not exactly a drug that’s easy to wean off of, either.

Thankfully, I learned early on about the potential damages caused by PPIs and decided to take matters into my own hands. I began researching and investing in various natural herbal supplements to help with my symptoms. At the same time, I started a blog, creating acid-free recipes for my fellow GERD sufferers.

It became daunting to have to swallow pill after pill (even if they were natural) to get rid of reflux episodes. Funny enough, I started chewing on a few of those pill-encased herbal powders, like marshmallow root, and came up with a better solution.
