Today we’d like to introduce you to Cami Nyx
Hi Cami, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ll lay out a brief roadmap of how I got where I am today!
When I was 8 my parents signed me up for voice lessons at a local studio in town. (Just to try and get me into a hobby).
Turned out, I loved it!
When I was 9 I started taking classical piano lessons as well at the same studio.
When I was 10 I switched vocal coaches and my new coach had me start singing musical theater and encouraged me to audition for a local production of Annie, to get practice singing/auditioning in front of people.
To our surprise, I booked the role of Annie!
From the ages of 11-15 I participated in all kinds of musical theater (local and domestic), vocal competitions, and began learning to sing and play simultaneously.
When I began high school, I switched vocal coaches again and began teaching with a classical opera coach. For 4 years I studied Opera, while continuing to compete in vocal competitions and participate in musical theater.
I also began teaching myself guitar in high school.
When I was 17, I made the decision to move to Nashville for college and study music business and audio engineering.
In college, I began writing and recording my own music.
In 2023, I graduated college and began performing acoustic shows at local breweries, bars, etc (basically anywhere that would have me). In late 2023, I formed a band and started playing shows constantly.
In 2024, we played shows almost every single weekend. All while I continue to write and record my own music!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s never a smooth road, is it?
I didn’t really begin to struggle until I moved to Nashville in 2019.
It may sound conceited to say, but for the first time in my life, I was not the best at singing, or playing piano or doing anything I had been ‘known for’ back home.
I became nervous and quiet and afraid to put myself out there for the first time ever. I had to learn how to build myself up and believe in myself. It’s hard going to school with thousands of kids who were all the best at music where they came from too. And they all want the same dream I want. And seeing some of my peers blow up on social media, or make i t on american idol and go from just being a student to being a star, all while I was still in school trying every single day to make it.
When I graduated from college in 2023 I had finally built myself up, I was confident, playing shows, being an artist, AND I had a job in the music industry. Life was awesome. Then, I got laid off and was so very lost. I applied to jobs for months on end with no luck at all. I was quickly running out of savings and wasn’t performing at all. It was the lowest point ever for me. Then my parents told me I should look at this as a blessing in disguise. For the first time in my life, I have nothing distracting me or holding me back from going all in on my own dreams and career. So, I went all in on being an artist and haven’t looked back since.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an artist, living in Nashville, TN. (I do have a silly little retail job on the side to help pay some bills)
Looking at my strengths/weaknesses, I am a singer and performer. That is where I thrive in the artist world. I do write my own songs, and record some of the instruments on them, but my strengths lie in singing and being up in-front of a crowd.
I am definitely known for that as well. In high school I was known as the girl who sings and performs. I even got the superlative for ‘most musical’!
I am most proud of my work ethic, which I give credit to my family for that one. I currently (and have always) done everything myself. I book all of my own shows, make my own merch, record and write my own music, make my own outfits, the list goes on and on. I have no shame or fear in reaching out to people, calling, emailing, putting myself out there. Everything I have ever gotten, is because of my own hard work.
I think my work ethic is what sets me apart from others. There are too many lazy people in the world! (Something my grandfather instilled in me at a young age).
You can be really talented, but that will only go so far.
I also think my perserverance sets me apart. I will never give up. Ever. No matter how many times people will ignore me, tell me no, say I’m too young. I will never stop. I can’t see myself doing anything else with my life at all. There have been times when life gets hard and I start thinking I may need to stop pursuing this and get a ‘real job’ but whenever I do that, I can’t picture myself doing anything else. At all. There’s no option, I have to be an artist.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I know there’s some saying for this but I can’t remember it now, so I’ll say it in my own way.
I’m a firm believer that you can’t get anywhere in life if you don’t take risks. Risks are crucial in moving forward.
I think one of the biggest risks I’ve ever taken was moving hundreds of miles away from home, not knowing a single person, and working towards my dream in this big city, Nashville. It was a risk, and it was one of the most challenging things I’ve ever done, but I wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t taken that risk. It pushed me in ways I had never been pushed before.
