Rising Stars: Meet Mariano Mallia of Hendersonville, TN

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariano Mallia

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My first musical memories come from Monacilioni, Italy, where my uncle was a local orchestra conductor and music teacher. At just 6 years old, I remember my uncle playing just about every instrument under the sun. From those times, I developed a deep appreciation for music.

I grew up playing piano and trumpet, but it wasn’t until I was 18 that I picked up the guitar and started writing, singing, and producing music. When I moved away from home, I had no TV or video games, and only a laptop that had been handed down to me from my older brother. This laptop had FL Studio on it, a recording software used by producers and beat makers to produce music. One day I opened that software and have never stopped making music since.

Over the years, I developed my ability and sound by writing countless songs, playing numerous shows, and producing songs across various styles and genres. However, in 2018 my career came to a sudden halt after suffering a vocal injury which severely altered my ability to sing and speak, ultimately leading to a four year recovery process. During this difficult time, I built my studio and continued to hone my skills by writing and producing music, hoping that one day I would be able to sing again

Finally, in 2023 I was able to return to singing and releasing music again after four years of recovery and determination. Since my return, my growing catalogue has accumulated over half a million listens, and my music has been featured on stations across the country, including 94.7 WDSD, 93.7 WSTW, 99.1 Radio Rehoboth, 92.1 WOMR, 95.3 WCHE, 98.5 WNUW, DOC Radio, iHeart Media’s “Nashville’s Next”, and many others.

In addition to my artist career, I work with artists and songwriters from across the US and across the world to bring their visions to life through my production, mixing, and mastering work.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the biggest challenges I have faced in this journey is overcoming vocal injury. In 2018, my vocal cords had become partially paralyzed, also known as vocal paresis. I had lost my ability to sing and speak normally, and in the span of just a few weeks, I went from being a full-time singer to being an Uber driver. Ultimately, it took me four years to recover and return to singing.

However, it turns out that sometimes what seems like the worst thing to happen to you can end up being the best thing to happen to you. For a few years leading up to this injury, I was like a blind driver on a winding road, and I had left my faith a thousand miles behind me. Maybe a vocal injury was exactly the wake-up call that I needed. Sometimes it takes hitting a low to regain your faith, get back up on your feet, and not take the miracle of life for granted. In the depths of that situation, I was molded into a new person, and something told me to keep going.

The last thing the doctor said to me was that my voice wouldn’t get any better without a second surgery. But he was wrong. God had other plans for my life. And it wasn’t until I put my faith in God that I experienced the healing that I had been searching for everywhere else.

It was only in losing what I thought was most important that I found something even greater. And I hope that my story and songs can inspire others to keep chasing after their dreams and to have faith, even in the face of adversity.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in music production and songwriting. I pride myself on writing emotive stories, captivating melodies, and my ability to take listeners on a journey with a raw and unique production style. I have worked with artists and songwriters from around the world to help bring their musical visions to reality.

However, what I am most proud of is doing honest business in an industry that can often take advantage of young artists who have a dream. Sadly, I have heard countless horror stories of production deals gone wrong, label deals gone wrong, and scams that have left artists with an empty wallet and no results.

In addition to just producing, mixing, and mastering, I try to educate new artists and songwriters with as much industry knowledge as I can offer. Some artists and songwriters come in not knowing how to register their songs with a PRO, how to collect all of the royalties due to them, or how to distribute their music. I also provide guidance to artists on the materials and deliverables they need to prepare in order to pitch their music for sync licensing opportunities in TV and film.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I don’t know if I believe in luck or not. But what I do know is that the people with the most luck are often times the ones who never give up, the ones who keep showing up, and the ones who hold strong to their faith despite the adversity that comes their way. Ultimately, I believe that life is all about perspective. You can see the challenges you face as defeat, or you can choose to view them as obstacles to be overcome and growth opportunities that ultimately strengthen you for the rest of your journey.
