Today we’d like to introduce you to Logan Murphy
Hi Logan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in a very musical family in rural Kentucky, & fell in love with music as a teenager. I accidentally stumbled into production at around 15. I would spend lots of time at my grandparents house building tracks through an 8 track recorder on the family keyboard, and would get lost in that for hours. It was so fun to me. I had no language for it at the time, but what I was doing was actually writing songs and building tracks for them. At 18, I couldn’t escape the feeling of needing to pursue production & writing more seriously, & found myself apprenticing at a studio in Kansas City called JTL Group. Jared Logan (the founder of JTL Group) became a fast friend and mentor to me on my journey into production and studio life. I spent the next 6 years waiting tables, grinding with drumming gigs, chasing clients, and honing my craft all to support and build my production career.
I took the terrifying dive into full-time music in 2018 and haven’t looked back since. Now I live in Nashville with my beautiful wife Hannah, where I produce for clients, write songs, and oversee a handful of sync projects. I’ve had a hand in hundreds of songs now & am proud to be a part of over 150 million streams across DSP. 15 year old me would’ve never imagined that music could turn into something so exciting. I’m super thankful for my journey and couldn’t imagine doing anything else.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The grind of growing my business into a full-time venture was by far the most challenging part of my career. Every penny and free hour was spent investing in my craft during the early 7-8 years. But so thankful for all the growth!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in two genres mostly; alt-pop & cinematic-folk. I have two main projects right now;
The Paper Brigade is an alt-pop band project that I started just around a year ago, I take lead on vocals and production for that project. The other project I’m really investing in is my solo folk project called Lockton. This project mostly lives for sync, but I deeply love the songs!
I pride on being a one-stop-shop type of producer. Being a multi-instrumentalist, producer & mixer, I love starting a project and seeing it all the way to the finish line. I feel this gives me a special connection with each song and a deeper personal touch versus the assembly line style production,
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
One thing clients say often about me is that I have a very un-intimidating approach and attitude towards production. I always want the culture within my studio and projects to feel clean and inviting. I feel the songs reach their highest potential that way along with the relationships.
