Today we’d like to introduce you to Steven Malcolm
Hi Steven, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
it all started in 2010 when I gave my life to Jesus at a hip hop church here in Grand Rapids, MI
I grew up fatherless after my father was deported back to Jamaica for a drug case when I was 9 years old. due to my mothers traumatic upbringing she ended up battling an alcohol addiction the majority of my childhood so that really forced me to find my own path in life.
by the age of 18, my senior year in high school, I was looking in the mirror asking myself, whats your purpose, who am I? and at that same time was when people around the city started inviting me to come visit this hip hop church called “The Edge”
I walked in to the church and left a follower of Jesus. after a year of attending it was time to serve so I joined the worship team and I found my true passion and even better, my calling! I found using my voice to speak truth to the world is something that brings me a joy only the lord can give.
The pastor ended up getting a grant so we can teach the youth how to write and record music and I ended up living in the church/studio teaching then recording my own songs. I would go on to release 3 whole projects out of the church.
in 2016 an a&r at Curb Records seen a contest video I did and was starting a hip hop imprint, so I was the 1 draft pick!
2017 we hit the ground running and have been traveling the world showing the nations Christian Hip Hop in here!!!!!!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
its been a roller coaster of a journey but thats the beauty. ups and downs are what make life, life. I would say the hardest challenge has been being a business man. im not just a rapper, im in the music business and lets just say even in the christian industry business can also be business.
I don’t hate it I just realized I have to move different and gain wisdom on the business side despite not having any male father figure to teach me.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
im a full time christian hip hop artist from the midwest! I preach Jesus in the hip hop content to the world.
known for my high energy, and dynamic musical style, fashion, and family.
most proud moment is collaborating with Snoop Dogg on my 3rd album, its a song called “Summertime”
What sets me apart is my mission. im not just some rapper talking about drugs, money, and women, but im an artist with a message and purpose. That fatherless kid that walked into a church looking for identity, found it in his Heavenly Father.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
absolutely !!!! its not viewed the best to collaborate with mainstream artists as a christian artist. sounds WILD right? the church throwing stone for being a light to the dark, it baffled me as well.
I come from that world, mainstream hip hop is what I grew up on and still find a lot of inspiring from.
I look at myself as that light that can be in both worlds, reaching and teaching the body of christ as well as being a light to the streets where a lot are scared to go!
I told the Lord a long time ago, send ME, ILL GO!!!!!
you have to take risks in life, otherwise you’ll live with regret. a lot off times greatness is a direct result of risk taking.
