Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Golden
Hi Julia, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been a musician as long as I can remember. From a very young age, I very confidently told people I was going to be a rockstar when I grew up. There are videos of me as young as three and four singing the words to Taylor Swift’s first album in princess-themed nightgowns.
As I got older, my parents began putting me in arts classes and activities to foster my passions. I did my first musical and just six years old. Musical theatre became a huge passion of mine, and I ended up pursuing it all throughout middle and high school. This was a great way for me to learn to perform and I’ve always loved being on the stage.
When I was 11, I decided I wanted to start creating music of my own. I used the money I’d saved up from my birthday to buy a cheap ukulele off of Amazon and began writing songs on it. Looking back, they were silly tunes, but I worked hard on them and was proud of them. At twelve, I performed my first live gig featuring both covers and original music at a small charity festival in Eugene, Oregon while visiting family on the west coast. On this same trip, my Aunt, who works at a music charity organization, gifted me my first guitar.
It took my a while to get around to learning it, but by 14, I was decent enough to start learning and writing songs on it. At 15, I played my first cover show, and the rest, as they say, is history.
I was still, however, intending to pursue musical theatre professionally out of high school, and even attended a prestigious arts school my junior year called Interlochen Arts Academy. After returning home for the summer, playing more shows, and visiting Nashville for the first time, my plans drastically changed. I finished up my high school credits online and graduated early in January 2024. I have been pursuing music full time since!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No journey of this manner can ever be easy, right? My biggest obstacle growing up was facing ridicule for my passions. Kids in school never really understood my interests, and teachers often didn’t take them seriously. I’ve always marched to the beat of my own drum, so it never slowed me down.
I’ve faced a little bit of push back due to my age- a lot of people and venues either don’t trust me or don’t take me seriously because of my age. Now that I have turned 18 and made a little bit of a name for myself within my area, they’re a bit more open, but there’s still a little fighting that has to be done.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I consider myself a country-rock singer/songwriter, but I like to blend eras and genres to create my won unique sound. My influences come from everywhere in the music world; 70’s rock, modern country, classic outlaw country, blues, pop, indie/folk, etc. There are so many artists that I admire and take inspiration from, but I try my best to blend all of those things into something that is authentically me.
I think the thing I’m the most proud of as an artist would be either the new projects I am working on or my brand altogether. I have been working very hard behind the scenes on some exciting things, and I cannot wait to share them with my audience. I think these are the best representation for what I want to be and sound like as an artist, and I am very proud of the way they are turning out.
I will also say that my brand, my social media presence, all of those things- I take a lot of pride in those too. It is often difficult to create a name and image for yourself as a small artist, but between my team and I, I think we’ve done a pretty decent job if I do say so myself.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I have always said that no artist, business, or project of any kind can be successful without authenticity. My biggest goal as a creative is to always be 100% honest and real with my audience.
