Life & Work with Nina Kennedy of Vanderbilt University

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nina Kennedy

Hi Nina, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was invited to open the concert season for Vanderbilt’s Blair School of Music in Turner Hall. I was born in Nashville and made my debut as piano soloist with the Nashville Symphony at age 13. After earning my master’s degree from Juilliard I went on to tour the U.S., Europe, the Caribbean, and South America as a concert pianist.
My first book of memoirs “Practicing for Love” is a Lambda Literary Award Finalist.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The classical music world is a very sexist field. Male conductors and concert agents have made things very difficult for women. Some of their behaviors have been quite inappropriate. Fortunately things are slowly changing in the wake of the #MeToo movement.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I suppose I’m most proud of the review of my New York Debut in the “New York Times.” I am also proud of the music videos my company (INFEMNITY Productions) produced in Vienna, Austria, which can be found on YouTube. Most recently I was presented in concert at the National Arts Center in Mexico City as part of the International Piano Festival in Black and White, and received a thunderous standing ovation. It was my first big concert since COVID so I was very pleased.

What makes you happy?
My kittycat, Mittens Rachmaninoff, makes me happy. I am happiest on a tropical beach. Dancing at the club also makes me happy.
A full meal of good food with excellent wine and delightful conversation makes me happy.
