Life & Work with Welsh Wolf of East Nashville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Welsh Wolf.

Welsh Wolf

Hi Welsh, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ll try and keep it short. My birth name is Paul Freeman and I grew up in Wales, UK and I found a guitar in a dumpster when I was 10/11 years old. I taught myself how to play it while listening to my Dad’s records.
I left home and moved to London when I was 16/17 and joined a band. Then after that, me and one of my bandmates left that band and we started our own thing and we got signed to Boy George’s label. After a couple of records, I left and started writing and touring as a guitar player for various pop acts. That led to me being signed to a publishing deal by Warner Chappell Music in LA.
I moved to LA to write for various artists/bands and in that process, I got a label deal with Clive Davis. I did that for a few years and then I left and signed with a British label and Management company called Trinifold. I was fortunate enough to do a lot of European-based touring. That deal expired and I moved to Nashville in 2019.
During the past few years, I continued to write and then I met my now manager, Jen Florez, through my old publisher. She put together a Songwriters Camp in Nashville in the Summer of 2022 and we became fast friends after that. One day, we had a heart-to-heart on what I wanted to do and what inspired me musically and we decided to do a retransformation of sorts which included doing away with the singer-songwriter in me and figuring out what was truly inspiring to me. Shortly after that, my alter-ego Welsh Wolf was born! The 1st single “Wreck” was the catalyst that started the entire process about 18 months ago. Now here we are:))))))
That’s the very short version!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s never a completely smooth road and if you really think about it, that road doesn’t end. It’s ongoing and you’re always evolving creatively. Aside from the usual artistic “no one understands me” stuff. I feel as though the hardest part has been to make music without interference from the outside and maintaining a strong sense of self. That can be mentally challenging and I can see how some people could lose their way easily. It’s not for the faint of heart. To sing your own music is probably the most vulnerable of art forms as it truly comes from within you. To stand on a stage and bare your soul like that can leave you very open and not everyone can do it (although everyone seems to have an opinion on it). Music is so subjective. I guess you have to develop thick skin pretty quickly :).

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an Artist, a Singer, a Songwriter, a Producer. I wear many hats. I’m most proud of the charity projects that I’m involved in though. buildOn being one of the charities that is so near and dear to my heart. Giving back and helping others is one of the most important things we can do in this life. As for the music? What sets me apart is probably for someone else to say.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Genuine Happiness. I wake up grateful for my life every, single day. I’m grateful for my wife, my puppy, Crumpet, my friends and my manager. All of that is how I define a successful life. Their words will be how I live on. The songs might be heard, but it’s how you loved and were loved that keeps your memory alive.
