Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Zuck.
Hi Jay, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
From the time I was small, music has had a profound and positive impact on my life. I created The Songwriter’s Joint about a year and a half ago with the intention of honoring the musicians who have inspired me and brought so much positivity to my life. In my mind, the most important way we honor these musicians is to fundraise and contribute to causes they champion, or in Greg “Fingers’ ” Taylor’s case, were directly affected by. Back in October we launched our first annual benefit concert “Sing 4 Fing,” with the mission of celebrating blues and Coral Reefer Legend, Fingers Taylor. We aim to do so every year by bringing together musicians from all genres (blues, folk, country, rock, reggae) to raise money for the Alzheimers Foundation of America.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I could not have asked for a better outcome the night of Sing 4 Fing. The performers, the venue, the crowd, and the Songwriters Joint team were incredible, and I’m proud that our teamwork resulted in a donation to AFA of over $7,000 and a private donation in our name of $5,000. It took a solid 8 months of coordination and planning to get this event off the ground, and in a human business like this, we had to be problem-solvers all along the way.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
The Songwriters Joint is a lot of things: a community of music lovers, an original apparel brand, and a platform for musicians and songwriters. I’m proud of the success we’ve found in only about a year and a half! When I’m not pursuing my passion in music and working to grow our business, I am proud to be a private school teacher of 15 years at the Middle School level.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
When I think about risk-taking I cant help but think about one of my favorite books called “The Alchemist,” which I teach to my students every Spring. It tells us that when someone is willing to be courageous and go in search of their dreams, the whole universe conspires to help achieve it. The author, Paulo Coelho writes, “‘My heart is afraid that it will have to suffer,’ the boy told the Alchemist one night as they looked up at the moonless sky. ‘Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And that no heart has ever suffered when it foes in search of its dreams.'” I have definitely seen those dynamics at play.
