Today we’d like to introduce you to Emma Nelson
Hi Emma, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I became a registered dietitian in 2021, over three years ago. I have always had a passion for nutrition and helping others’ flourish, which is what attracted me to this career. I grew up as a dancer and had a vested interest in nutrition because I understood it could be the difference maker in how well I performed. However, an innocent pursuit of health and performance eventually turned into an unhealthy obsession. It was ultimately changing my mindset around food and improving my self-image that allowed me to fall in love with nutrition again.
The path to me opening my nutrition private practice wasn’t linear. It took working in the hospital system, long-term care, and state-funded nutrition programs to realize I was not fulfilled. I was tired of working for a healthcare system that felt so broken. The role of nutrition in health care in my opinion is not what it should be. This led me to opening Nutrition by Emma in August of 2022. I am living my true passion! I am able to see the differences made in my clients’ lives each and every day.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. Keep in mind, I studied nutrition and dietetics, not business. Not to mention, starting a business in healthcare feels like a whole different ballgame! There tends to be a lot of “red tape,” which I don’t think I was ever prepared for. I’ve lost money, I’ve done things backwards, and I have felt a little alone at times, but it has been more than worth it. I have had to stretch myself to develop very important business skillsets that have helped me grow as a professional and a human in general.
As you know, we’re big fans of Nutrition by Emma, LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Nutrition by Emma is the name of my nutrition private practice. I am known for offering concierge nutrition coaching, which means I maintain a small caseload of clients that get high-touch support from me. Most business models in healthcare are all about numbers — how many patients can you see in the shortest amount of time. I wanted my business to be structured differently. I am able to really build strong relationships with my clients and provide the time, support, and attention they deserve. It has worked out beautifully so far!
I take a holistic approach with my clients meaning while YES we work on nutrition extensively, I also provide support on other aspects of their health such as sleep, stress management, movement, routines, and more. I also offer functional lab testing such as micronutrient assessments and GI-MAPs. Changing nutrition patterns requires behavior and mindset change, so I utilize special counseling techniques to help lifestyle change feel more effortless for my clients.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
People may not know that I teach barre in my free time at Pure Barre Green Hills! It’s my other passion!
