Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Davis
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My photography story goes all the way back to fifth grade. My teacher was a photographer outside of being a teacher, and during recess he would take the time to teach me the ends, and outs of his camera…. after that I always had a camera on me. Fast forward to 2014 when my husband got me my first DSLR, and I started my photography business. I just wanted to make some money on the side, as I was a stay at home mom taking care of my daughter. I met so many awesome couples, and families, and built a great client relationships. In 2020 I wrapped a few weddings, and some lifestyle sessions, and decided to take a break, and that break turned into my 3rd pregnancy, and then postpartum, and then I blinked, and it was 2024. I lost my joy for photography, I didn’t think I was good enough, as there are hundreds of talented photographers in my area. I just gave up on myself. In February of this year I was trying to decide on where I could volunteer in my church, with being a stay at home mom of 3 who also homeschools, I didn’t feel called to children’s ministry. I was told there was a position open on the media team for a photographer, and knew that’s where I was being led to. A few days later I was asked if I wanted to shoot the worship night, and said “sure why not!” Worship night comes, and I’m sitting in the parking lot at MTSU dusting off my camera that I haven’t used in 4 years, hoping it still worked, and wouldn’t give me issues. That night changed everything for me, and for my photography. I found my joy again, I had a fire burning inside of me… I had my passion back. 1 month later, I rebranded my logo, updated all my old business pages, and booked a session. Since then I’ve done countless family, and maternity sessions. I held a mini session fundraiser, worked another worship night, and I just wrapped my 5th wedding this month. I didn’t expect things to take off in the way that they have, but I’m so thankful for it. I have gone full time with my photography business, diving head first into the wedding industry, all while homeschooling my 3 daughters, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Emily Davis Photography!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
For me in the beginning it was a little bumpy, but only because I was my worst enemy. I let my fears rule me, and keep me from growing in the past. I also didn’t allow myself to be apart of a community, thinking that we were all against each other, when in fact it’s the total opposite. Being part of a community has helped me learn, and grow so much, while also making awesome relationships.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a lifestyle, and wedding photographer. I am shifting my work into mostly wedding photography, as that’s where my passion is, but I also dabble in a little bit of everything from concert photography, maternity, newborn to families I honestly love it all. I think what sets me apart is I truly love people, and knowing that I take pride in what I do. I pay attention to details, making sure that the clients get to shoot on their good side, or taking note of some of their insecurities, and really making them feel comfortable. I focus on building genuine connections with my clients, allowing their personalities to shine through in every frame. My approach combines the latest techniques, and keen eye for natural light, resulting in stunning images that not only document the day, but also evoke the feelings of love, and joy shared between couples, and families.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I think what always shocks or surprises people is that I homeschool my 3 children, while also working my business full-time. In the beginning of my career it was something I didn’t know if I was going to be able to still do, but we’ve found a balance!
