Life & Work with Timothy James

Today we’d like to introduce you to Timothy James

Hi Timothy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
From a young age, I felt an inexplicable connection to country music. At just ten years old, I had a collection of tapes featuring the iconic voices of legendary country stars. There was something about the melodies and heartfelt lyrics that resonated deep within me. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it, but the music struck a chord that I couldn’t ignore.

My journey into music truly began at seventeen. One summer evening, I watched in awe as my friend’s father strummed a guitar around a campfire, effortlessly captivating everyone with his songs. I was mesmerized by the power of one person and one guitar to evoke such emotion. That night ignited a fire in me, and I became obsessed with learning to play. I dove headfirst into songwriting, pouring my heart into melodies and words, and just six months later, I found myself on stage with my high school rock band.

As the years passed, I explored various genres—blues, rockabilly, and yes, country. But country music always eluded me. The musicianship required to sound authentic felt daunting, especially during the 2000s when the bar was set so high. Frustrated, I stepped away from music altogether, opting instead for a decade-long career in construction. My business flourished, and I married, but life took a sharp turn, leading to a painful divorce.

My darkest hour came when I found myself alone, heartbroken over the woman I had loved fiercely. In my solitude, I turned back to the guitar. It became my refuge, a way to channel my despair into something beautiful. I began writing again, rediscovering that youthful passion I had felt at seventeen. It was during this time of introspection that I began to define my sound, honing my skills and finally feeling like I could express myself authentically in country music.

Fate would intervene when I crossed paths with Jonny Houlihan, a talented veteran songwriter and producer. He became not just a mentor but a lifeline. Jonny pushed me to grow, to dig deeper into my craft, and his unwavering belief in me sparked a transformation. With his guidance, I began releasing a new songs every forty days, creating music videos for each and sharing my journey with the world. In just thirteen months, I went from a mere one follower to over eighty thousand across all platforms. I honestly would have been happy with a few hundred fans over a year that enjoyed what I was doing.

Under Jonny’s encouragement, I formed a band, and we began rehearsing weekly, booking local shows here in Boston and quickly became dubbed as the “Real Boston Cowboy”. I even made friends with some amazingly talented people that grind nightly on Broadway in Nashville and have embraced me like family to feature me with their own bands. By the way,a top 3 bucket list dream. I never in my life thought I would be on a stage in Nashville with that caliber of musicians. The thrill of performing my own songs, watching audiences sing along, has been indescribable. It feels surreal to have musicians rally behind me, believe in me and coming to rehearsals 2 times a week. Especially when there was a time I struggled to believe in myself or even wanted to live.

This past year brought unexpected accolades; I was honored to be named Country Artist of the Year by the New England Music Hall of Fame. Each new recognition felt like a surreal dream, a series of “pinch me” moments that I still can’t fully comprehend.

As I reflect on this whirlwind year, I’m filled with gratitude and anticipation for what lies ahead. For anyone reading my story, remember this: no matter how distant your dreams may seem, don’t ever give up. Avoid the trap of comparison. There is endless talent in the world especially in the saturated country music scene. But your only competition is yourself. Keep striving to become a better version of who you are, putting in 110% everyday and you may just discover strengths you never knew existed.

I believe your mind will take you anywhere you want to go, but you have to believe it and be authentic with yourself.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Probably the biggest struggle was keeping a band together long enough to bring the music to life that I pictured in my head. Seems as soon as we get close to the prize some sort of life happening comes into play with a member.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I tend to be a bit of a recluse, finding just as much joy in the comfort of my home as I do in exploring new places. Writing is a passion of mine, as a songwriter, it provides me with a unique outlet for self expression and creativity.I don’t think I’ll ever stop. It becomes a part of you.

While many recognize me primarily as a guitarist, I’ve recently garnered praise for my vocals, which I’ve always considered secondary to my guitar skills. It seems everyone can be their own toughest critic.

In addition to being a dedicated parent to my son, I take pride in the journey of becoming my authentic self as a musician. It’s been a labor of love, characterized by countless hours of practice, listening, and honing my craft, even during times when it felt like I wasn’t making significant progress.

I believe my greatest strength lies in my confidence across various situations. Whether I’m in a music video, writing scripts, producing my own tracks, or creating content, I thrive in a multitude of musical genres, constantly pushing myself to excel.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
My happiest time for me is waking up on Sunday mornings. Sunday is a day I don’t answer my phone unless it’s an emergency and I start my morning off in the sauna. After the sauna, I have an early lunch and I grab a cup of coffee and I go in my music room for the rest of the day. I find that I am at my most creative when I have nobody bothering me and I have time to decompress from my busy week. Besides the weekly grind, it makes my so happy to hear people singing along to my songs when I am on stage. There is something magical about that and it drives me to keep going in this oversaturated industry,
