Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Scalzo
Hi Samantha, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In 2022 we began a huge life shift, Our family decided to pack up everything we knew and move from Las Vegas, NV. to Tennessee for the purpose of having a homestead lifestyle. In 2023 we slowly started to build our garden areas and were growing pretty well until our 5th child was born with a life changing heart defect. At 4 months old she had an open heart surgery to repair her CHD, it was successful. This made it even more important to us to be able to feed our bodies, soul and mind with the nutrition we need. In 2024, we dove head first into creating a successful market garden with the purpose and intention of feeding our community sustainably grown food free of pesticides, herbicides and using only regenerative agricultural methods. We wanted our community to trust where their food comes from and trust the farmers who cultivate and care for the land, plants and animals we are providing them. We now have our main High tunne growing area that pushes out all of our vegetables including lettuces, spinach, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, onions, scallions, carrots and herbs. We recently planted 3000 garlic cloves in the fall to bring delicious organic garlic to our community in summer 2025. We also planted cut flower fields that will add beautiful cut flower bouquets to add to our farm stand and market tables. In 2025 we are looking to expend to have 2 more high tunnels for growing.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t think farming is easy for anyone especially starting out in a new area. We had a lot to figure out about our soil health and how to amend it. When we first started we were growing in the field with no high tunnel which was great, but you cannot control a lot about the growing environment. A lot of our fields were washed out during hard rain storms, we would have to trench walkways in the middle of storms so our beds wouldn’t get washed away. We had a big learning curve. We are still learning. Not to mention our first year was put on hold when you have to deal with health issues in your family. I think each year brings new growth and new challenges along the way. We try to adapt and overcome.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Brush Creek Farm ?
We are a regenerative farm that practices no till methods and truly try to focus on our soil health above all. We want to steward our land and soil. We steer clear of placing any harsh chemicals and pesticides in our gardens to damage our soil in the longterm, in addition we don’t want to damage our own bodies or our communities with unnatural things just to fight off pests and weeds, especially when their are many other methods to combat this naturally. We stand by that in all of our growing methods and that is what we want our brand to represent. From our vegetables, flowers, and to our feed of our animals we try to determine how to best naturally provide for them. Our farm provides mainly salad greens and additional vegetables that would be wonderful in salads, In addition we grow many other vegetables, cut flowers, pasture raised eggs and I also provide organic sourdough bread to local customers. I want our community to be able to feed their body, mind and soul with what it needs to thrive. Food is medicine for your body and flowers are medicine for your soul. I love being able to provide for each and our community to be able to trust the farmer that tends to this beautiful land the Lord has blessed us with.
