Inspiring Conversations with Scott Blackerby of Lost River Catering

Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Blackerby

Hi Scott, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started out working as a dishwasher for a small restaurant in Louisville, Kentucky. After about a year, the owner/executive chef suggested that I go to culinary school. After graduating two years later, I started working for Marriott Hotels as a sous chef and would eventually work up to the title of executive sous chef. During this time, I finished with a degree in hospitality management. I would eventually get a masters in education and teach for 15 years. I started Lost River Catering as a way to get back into the hospitality industry. I post weekly cooking videos with me and my son on Instagram and YouTube. I am also certified with the American Culinary Federation. I have won several awards including making it to the quarter-finals of Carla Hall’s Favorite Chef.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Early in my career, I struggled with excessive drinking. I got sober in 2005 and I still participate in recovery programs locally. Today, I am a practicing chef, educator, husband, and father of two boys.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I provide off-premise catering services for small to medium events. My catering would best be described as gourmet and international fusion cuisine. I was trained in classical French cuisine and I incorporate French cooking styles into my dishes. Earlier this year, I received the Kentucky Proud Certification for using at least 25% local products.

How do you think about luck?
At my age (50), luck has helped some by being at the right place and time. However, I believe that persistence and determination always prevails.
