Conversations with Owen Fell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Owen Fell

Hi Owen, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
From as early as I can remember, music has been a part of my life. I was always hitting things, trying to make a coherent beat and dancing to Michael Jackson’s music, trying to learn all his iconic moves. I guess you could say music was just flowing through me. I know that’s a little cheesy, but that’s how I felt. My biggest influences include Bruno Mars, Michael Jackson, Freddie Mercury, Prince, and Michael W. Smith, all of whom have shaped my passion for performance. From an early age, I originally wanted a drum set, but my parents got me a guitar when I was seven. I became obsessed, playing it constantly. They enrolled me in lessons and I threw myself into learning, practicing, and performing. By fifth grade, I was playing for my class, and in middle school, I joined the jazz band. I tried to snatch every possible opportunity I could to perform, because I just love to perform and share my gift with others. Along the way, I picked up other instruments, including piano, drums, bass, ukulele, mandolin, and saxophone, which I learned in the school band. I also joined my church’s worship band, a decision that made me incredibly happy because it allowed me to use my gifts to glorify God. Even as a kid, I knew I wanted to be a performer. Dancing, learning instruments, and soaking up every experience guided me and is guiding me toward my dream: to become a pop star, plain and simple. Throughout my journey, I’ve been blessed with a core group of supportive friends and family who encourage me to keep improving and to never settle. My parents instilled in me the values of humility and hard work, reminding me to “speak with your actions and skills, not your words.” This advice has shaped my outlook—there will always be people better or worse than me, but my focus is on being the best version of myself and encouraging others to do the same. One defining chapter of my life was competing in the Dallas International Guitar Festival’s 10 Under 20 competition. I was a finalist for four consecutive years during high school, but it wasn’t until my senior year that I won first place. At first, I was disappointed not to place, but in hindsight, I saw how God used that time to prepare me. Each year, I grew as a musician and performer, and finally I was able to get first place (https://www.instagram.com/p/C62f_n7Mtv2). A similar journey unfolded with the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Jazz Band 1 competition. After years of striving, I achieved First Chair my senior year, another testament to God’s plan to help me grow and refine my skills. Today, I’m 19 and pursuing a Commercial Music major at Belmont University in Nashville. My current focus is learning everything I can about the music industry to prepare for the next steps in my career. My ultimate dream is to sell out arenas and make a living sharing my music. All I can do now is focus on my skills and try to improve as much as possible, because I know I’m never going to be done with learning. I’m glad God put me here in Nashville at Belmont, because I whole-heartedly know that this is where I’m supposed to be.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I believe that no journey is ever a smooth road, and that’s what makes it meaningful to keep pushing forward. Often, the struggles along the way turn out to be the most valuable parts of the journey. One challenge I’ve had to work through is watching others progress further than me through unethical means or by being overly cocky. It can be difficult to see them getting opportunities I’ve worked hard for and wonder why I’m not getting those opportunities. But I’ve learned to put my trust in God, knowing that He has me on a unique path. I just need to follow Him, because I know He knows what’s best for me and that alone gives me rest.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an artist passionate about creating meaningful music that resonates with people, whether it’s in live performances, studio sessions, or worship settings. What sets me apart is my determination to always put my best work forward and my commitment to constant growth and improvement. I’m most proud of the incredible community God has surrounded me with—a group of friends who’ve supported and encouraged me for years. They keep me grounded and hold me accountable, ensuring I stay true to my morals and values. Recently, I experienced a beautiful milestone by getting engaged to my fiancée, Macey. She keeps me the most grounded, as she knows what I need and what my goals and aspirations are. She truly is my best friend. These relationships encourage and motivate me to pour my heart into everything I do.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
People are most welcome to reach out to me about any musical projects they need help with. For 12 years now I have tried to learn as much as I can about all different styles of music ranging from Pop to Jazz to Rock to Country and everything in between. I love collaborating with other people. The community at Belmont is great for this and has only been encouraging me to collaborate with even more people. I’ve only been there for 3 months so far, but I’ve already collaborated with around 20 people on projects that they’ve had. If you want to reach out to collaborate or support me you can email me at owenfellmusic@gmail.com or you can DM me on Instagram @owenfellmusic or I’m about to have my new website owenfellmusic.com up and running, so you could use the contact form there to reach out. I help people produce their songs, which means I’ll help translate their ideas and put them into fully completed songs. Whether it’s crafting the right guitar parts, arranging harmonies, or refining the overall sound, I work closely with artists to bring their vision to life. My goal is to not only make their songs sound great but to ensure the final product authentically represents their unique style and story.
