Daily Inspiration: Meet Taylor Crandall

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Crandall

Hi Taylor, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always dreamed of going to cosmetology school. There was one close to my high school in Georgia that I would drive by and imagine going to. However, I was scared to something different from the “normal” of going to college. So that’s exactly what I did. I went to college and quickly realized it was not for me. I spent 3 years trying to find out what I wanted to do, changing my major, and luckily I have the most supportive parents who told me “you know you don’t have to go to college.” I did not return for my senior year of college, although I know I would’ve been there for at least 2-3 more years because I was so indecisive about my major, and I moved back home. I instantly knew I wanted to go to cosmetology school, specifically the one by old high school. I started working front desk at a salon and once I started school I began working at a different salon as an assistant. I immediately fell in love with doing hair. Seeing the clients reactions to having their dream hair and knowing you have helped make that dream come to life is a feeling I am so grateful for. I fell in love with the art of hair. Cosmetology school was filled with long days and lots of practice but I knew that I could do it, I felt like I fit in. Once I graduated I continued to assist at my salon, The Salty Mane, and then slowly started to build my own clientele after I had passed my state boards. A lot of my friends had moved to Nashville, so I was driving up almost every weekend after work to visit them, until one day my dad asked me “when are you moving to Nashville?” I knew I wanted to, I was in love with the city! I had found Vagabond after I had moved to Nashville and that’s when I started Hair by Taylor Crandall, my own business! I could not ask for a better salon family, a better place to continue to grow, here at Vagabond! Since I am still new to Nashville I am still building up my clientele, it’s such a blessing seeing new faces in my chair and meeting new clients/friends. Being able to say I have my own business as a stylist is something only little me would’ve dreamt of and now it’s a reality that would’ve never been possible without the support of my family, friends and coworkers.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road, moving to Nashville was very scary and new to me. I was alone but I was lucky enough to have friends who had already lived here. Finding a salon was the hardest part, maybe it was the hardest because it was the first step. But, I had many calls to my Dad for help on finding a salon fit for me. Building up a clientele from not knowing many people here in Nashville has also been a bit of a struggle. I am super lucky to have met friends who became clients and clients who have become friends, who help share my business! Social media and business cards have been so much fun to experiment with and are a fun way to grow!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a hair stylist who specializes in women’s hair color, cut, and extensions. I love the hair coloring process because it’s unique to each individual and allows me to be creative. I’m most proud of the confidence I give my clients. Hair plays such a big role in our lives, and I’m happy to be a part of it. Seeing my clients leave the salon with a new-found confidence is one of the best feelings. It may sound cheesy, but no matter how small getting your hair done may be, I’m happy I can make a positive change in someone’s day. I feel like my creativity sets me apart from others, I make every clients hair unique to them! I love to talk with my clients and really create a bond and a safe space, I always want my clients to feel comfortable whether that is making the appointment a hair and therapy session or a hair appointment to get some work done!

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up I was a total “girly-girl!” I loved anything makeup, hair, glitter, and anything pink! I grew up with an older brother who gave me some tough times about how much pink and glitter there was all over the house. I think growing up with an older brother was one of the best things. No matter what my new hobby or interest was he was always there to support me, no matter if it was wanting to play soccer or wanting to be a hairstylist.
