Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Allison Laffoon
Hi Dr. Allison, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Growing up in Iowa with a younger brother diagnosed with autism at an early age shaped my understanding of care and compassion. My parents were determined to provide him with the best and most “normal” life possible, which meant navigating countless tests, therapies, and appointments. I spent hours in doctors’ offices, observing the transformative impact some had on their patients—and, unfortunately, how others fell short. These experiences inspired me to join the ranks of those who helped, especially for individuals like my brother. My journey to surgery, however, was an unexpected one. While attending a Caribbean medical school, I was struck by the plight of animals on the island and co-founded the VSPCA with my husband. We worked with veterinarians to train local vets in spaying and neutering dogs and cats using the resources available. Assisting in those surgeries ignited a passion for working with my hands. As my medical training progressed, I realized I loved diagnosing and solving problems with both knowledge and skill. This path led me to general surgery training in San Antonio, where I discovered my love for plastic and cosmetic surgery. The ability to help patients feel more confident and change their lives in meaningful ways resonated deeply with me. Today, I am incredibly fortunate to carry on the legacy of Dr. Marvel in Nashville, continuing to grow his thriving practice and bring confidence and transformation to my patients.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey to medicine has been marked by many challenges, each shaping me into the surgeon I am today. Not being accepted into a U.S. medical school was a humbling experience, forcing me to reevaluate my determination and commitment. Attending a Caribbean medical school was an opportunity I embraced wholeheartedly, but it came with its own set of difficulties, including being far from the structured resources and networks typically available in the U.S. Despite this, I remained focused, knowing the path ahead would not be easy.
After medical school, I faced another hurdle as a preliminary surgery resident. I had to work harder than ever to prove myself and earn a categorical spot in a surgical training program. When I finally secured my place in San Antonio, it was a moment of immense pride, especially because I won the coveted Intern of the Year Award, but the sacrifices continued. For years, I lived apart from my husband and our beloved dogs, missing the comfort of home and the support of my closest companions.
Through every obstacle, I reminded myself of why I started this journey—to help others, to make a difference, and to honor the experiences that shaped me. These challenges not only pushed me to grow as a person but also deepened my empathy for my patients, many of whom are navigating their own struggles. Looking back, I am grateful for the hardships because they remind me every day of the strength and determination it takes to pursue a dream, and they make every success that much more meaningful.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a board-certified cosmetic surgeon specializing in breast and body procedures, with a focus on helping patients achieve their personal goals and feel confident in their own skin. My work centers on life-changing transformations—enhancing natural beauty and empowering my patients to embrace the best version of themselves. I am proud to have taken over Dr. Marvel’s thriving practice in Nashville, continuing his legacy while infusing it with my own passion and commitment to excellence.
What sets me apart is the personal connection I bring to my practice and the unique path that led me here. My upbringing taught me the importance of compassion and understanding, and those values remain at the heart of everything I do. My journey into medicine wasn’t traditional, and the challenges I faced shaped the surgeon I am today, I’ve always had to fight for my opportunities. My experiences taught me resilience and gave me a deep appreciation for the trust my patients place in me. I feel this makes me a fierce advocate for my patients and gives me the drive to understand their needs and desires. I also pride myself on never forgetting that while this is a business, it’s built by my patients and I vow to never put business needs over the needs and desires of my patients.
Every procedure I perform is about more than just aesthetics; it’s about helping my patients feel empowered and confident. Whether it’s a breast augmentation, a tummy tuck, or a full body transformation, I’m most proud of the lasting impact my work has on my patients’ lives. Seeing someone stand taller, smile brighter, and truly embrace their confidence is the most rewarding part of what I do. For me, cosmetic surgery isn’t just a career—it’s a calling to help people feel like the best version of themselves, inside and out.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me has evolved over the years, but at its core, it’s always been about the legacy I leave behind. Early in my career, I was focused on proving myself—earning the respect of my peers, my patients, and myself through hard work and determination. Over time, I’ve come to realize that my true legacy isn’t about accolades or professional achievements, but the lasting impact I have on the lives of my patients and the people around me. It’s about being remembered as someone who cared deeply, listened intently, and always put others first. My hope is that my work not only transforms lives but inspires others to approach their own goals with the same compassion and determination. This shift in perspective has grounded me and reinforced my commitment to making every interaction, every procedure, and every decision meaningful.
