Today we’d like to introduce you to Renee Evans
Hi Renee, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Art and creating have always been part of who I am. I grew up in a small farm town in Iowa where I was able to explore outside and constantly use my imagination. I fell in love with painting in high school art class and first started oil painting in junior college. I moved to California to attend art school with a focus on fashion design, but decided it wasn’t for me after 3 1/2 years. I became interested in photography after becoming a mother and that was my creative outlet for a long time while my three children were young, but in 2018, I really missed painting and told myself I would make time for it again, so I set up a small easel in my kitchen where I could paint alongside daily life with my family. Since then, my husband, our three children and I relocated to Middle Tennessee and that is when I was really able to start sharing my artwork. Middle Tennessee has provided me with so many amazing opportunities to share my work and I have made wonderful connections. It’s a really exciting time for me!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like many artists, I think a lot of my struggles have been internal. When I was in my twenties, I didn’t think it was really possible to be an artist, so I kind of let my dreams go dormant. I was always creating, though. Once I got married and started a family, it made me realize how fast life goes and I didn’t want to wait until I was older to make time to do what I loved, so I made time for it, even if it was 15 minutes here and there. As an artist, there’s a lot of opportunity for comparison and that can be a struggle, I remind myself a lot to focus on my own journey. Everyone’s path is different.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I paint in oil and mainly paint landscapes. I love to create serene scenes that evoke a sense of peace and calm and will bring joy to others. A collector told me once that she could actually feel her blood pressure lower when looking at my painting. I was really proud in that moment – to bring that sense of peace to someone else through my painting was really special.
I am really inspired by nature and am in awe of all of the beauty around us. I love studying the sky with all of its colors and cloud formations. I also love trees and open spaces. I paint what I love and sometimes refer to my landscapes as “dreamscapes”, since I typically dream them up as I paint.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I am so grateful for every opportunity to share my art with others. Painting brings me so much joy and I love that it also brings joy to others.
