Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Mcneal
Hi Tyler, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started to play in makeup back in 2015/2016 on myself. I taught myself throughout the years by watching YouTube, following my favorite content creators, buying so many new products all the top brands were launching.
I would always practice on myself or ask one of my friends to come over so I could practice the techniques I learned from the videos. I always loved watching Jeffree Star, James Charles, Patrick Starrr, etc. The boys in makeup always spoke to me most because they showed me that I could follow what I want to do with my life and had the opportunities to make it a reality.
Now, I reside in Franklin, TN working at a makeup retail store while also doing freelance makeup on the side. I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to do Brenda Lee’s makeup a few times over the Christmas season from the help of fellow artist, Charlie Boehm. He’s been so gracious to me and has really taken me under his wing since making the move to the area.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course there are always struggles when you’re a certain sex working in an industry that many deem as what should be done by the other sex. It’s always about breaking down that barrier and truly showing the world your talents and the knowledge that you have to offer.
Once people saw what I could do with makeup, the fact that I’m a man quickly became nothing but a fact rather than a worry.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a makeup artist and I truly enjoy the entire process from doing the actual work to getting to know my clients.
I specialize in glam makeup. Whether that be for events, weddings, parties, I always love to get creative and turn the fantasy to reality for my clients.
I’m known for my eyeshadow when it comes to my work. More often than not, you will be able to tell that I was the artist based on the eye the person is wearing. I love a pulled up eye with neutrals and nude tones.
The thing that I am most proud of is that I had the courage to actually do this. It takes a lot of confidence for a man to pick up a makeup brush and just have fun. It seems like every time a guy is interested in fashion, makeup, skincare, etc it’s always a negative thing. It feels like it’s shameful for a guy to truly take care of himself or even want to help others in the same way. So for me to be so adamant so young and for sticking with it, I can’t be any happier with how it’s been going.
As I said before, I’m known for my eyeshadow looks. Every artist needs to have a niche or something that sets them apart from others. As I always say for artists, or any other industry as well: if you’re booked just because they need makeup done; you’ve already lost. Once they start booking you for who you are, that’s when you’ve truly made your mark.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
My friends and family honestly deserve a huge shoutout, especially my mother. Even if we haven’t always seen eye to eye on things, she will always be in my corner supporting me and wishing for all the happiness in the world.
Charlie Boehm and Wendy Williams have also been huge mentors for me and have allowed me to meet some amazing people.
