Today we’d like to introduce you to Gina Lynch
Hi Gina, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in Chicago and my mom would do seamstress work part time. One day she brought me on one of her projects that happened to be at this beautiful huge salon right downtown and while she was measuring for some curtains she was making I remember just being in awe of all the stylists and how much fun they looked like they were having just making people beautiful. I told my mom “I want to work here one day”. At the time I was about 14 and the owner was standing behind me and heard me and asked if I would like to work Saturdays as a shampoo girl; without hesitation said yes! And so began my passion with becoming a hair stylist. As soon as I graduated high school in 2007, I went right into beauty school and hit the ground running. Over the years as a young stylist I apprenticed at a few different salons and truly learned everything they don’t teach you in school. Fast forward to 2013 I moved to Nashville and decided to take a year off from really doing anything to explore a new city. While that was all fun I knew I was ready to get back and truly push into growth mode at a new salon. I found Local Honey and at the time they were THE IT salon and I knew I wanted to be a part of it. I emailed the owner explaining how I was new to town and didn’t have any clientele but I was passionate and eager to be part of their team. He emailed me back stating that they weren’t looking for any new stylists but more established ones. I didn’t like that answer so I pushed him and asked If we could meet. Persistence is key! He emailed me back and said and I quote ” I admire your persistence”. That was it. I started a few weeks later and worked there for 5 years. I learned more than I had EVER learned at that salon and will always be grateful for that. Fast forward to now, I have since opened a boutique salon in the heart of Germantown. I have been fortunate enough to train under some of the best in the business, attend and work New York Fashion Week, Miami Swim week and multiple other fashion shows. I believe If you have a passion for something, you have to push yourself and throw everything you have into it and the universe will provide.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
For the most part I feel grateful that it has! It has taken many, many years and nothing was handed to me, so it was a lot of hard work, humbling experiences (you have to make mistakes to learn from them!) and patience.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I would like to think of myself as a pretty well rounded hair stylist. I specialize in seamless organic looking hair color and detailed haircuts. If someone presents to me a color or haircut I don’t personally believe I would be able to achieve I have no problem in saying so and referring them to someone I know would nail it. Being transparent in this industry is huge. Im very proud of the serene space I have created and wouldn’t have had the confidence to do it without all of the past experience I have. I believe you never stop learning and the second you think you’re the best, you’ve already lost your way.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Always playing with my dolls hair. This is pre YouTube era and I was always looking at pictures and books and trying them out on my dolls. I would beg my mom to do her hair and makeup from as long as I can remember. I have a younger sister and she was usually the guiniea pig for me!
