Meet John Salaway of Music First Productions LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Salaway

Hi John , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My dad is a drummer and he had drum sticks in my hands since I was physically able to grip them. There’s photos of me as a baby banging on the drums so when I started really learning to play at 10 years old, it came very naturally to me. From there, I picked up guitar, bass and piano in my teenage years and learned to sing and write songs. I then went to college to study music and got my degree in music business from
MTSU. Soon after graduating, I created my own company which later became Music First Productions LLC which is my studio, production company, custom songwriting & booking agency.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The Music business is probably the rockiest road that anyone could ever travel on and there are no maps or signs that point the direct path to success. It takes passion, belief, determination, hard work and perseverance to achieve any stability or success.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Music First Productions LLC?
I am proud to say that I have been a self employed independent contractor for almost two decades now and in that time I have worked with a long list of legends, famous artists and Grammy winning producers and songwriters.

My path has been a little bit different than most and it’s been a long hard road but a very rewarding one. I became a single parent at age 26 so I had to be very selective about what gigs I could take. That forced me to create my own opportunities so I could still be a good dad who’s present in my daughter’s life. I couldn’t take long touring opportunities so I learned how to book shows and create residencies and reoccurring local shows that could be regular income I could count on. At the same time, I invested in building my own studio piece by piece. I worked on my craft as a multi instrumentalist and learned how to become a better producer and songwriter. I’m open minded and constantly trying to learn more and improve everything i do while also always trying to treat others with respect and kindness. It’s been a long hard road but I try to remind myself to have gratitude for all of it.

I’m currently producing out of RCA Studio C and my home studio and collaborating with some of my favorite songwriters and musicians in town and from my favorite legendary bands. In that regard, I’m living the dream.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Love, Gratitude, Respect & Kindness.
