Conversations with Donny Van Slee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Donny Van Slee

Hi Donny, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started playing guitar in 6th grade after my dad bought me a guitar for Christmas. I started off learning songs that I wanted to play for my mom and eventually started learning songs to play for myself in my room. Once my pastor (also a professional musician) caught wind that I played guitar, he guided me and helped me get my first paid gig. Over 50 people showed up and it was alot of fun. After that show, I quit my day job and have been living off my music ever since. I eventually moved to Nashville to further my music career and have been here for about four years.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has been fairly smooth compared to other artists. The reason I moved to Nashville was because I was hired to perform at Tootsies Honky Tonk. So I had a consistent job/gig before moving to the city versus moving here and then looking for jobs. Also, I’m a full-time chiropractor so I have a safety net. However, the bumpiness comes from not being close to family and choosing to continue to believe in myself and chase my dreams, being hundreds of miles away from home.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I make music inspired by all the ups and downs of life. My uniqueness is in my voice. I was just on The Voice and Reba McEntire turned her chair for me. I will forever be grateful for her. Also, I’m pursuing multiple passions in life, music, and chiropractic so I’m hoping I’m showing kids it’s possible to pursue all your dreams.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
To gain a general sense of purpose and direction, set goals for yourself and work on becoming a better person every day while working to achieve those goals.
