Rising Stars: Meet Matt Lynch of Franklin, TN

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Lynch

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
What began as a portable sawmill operation – reclaiming timbers and lumber from trees and logs that would otherwise go to the landfill or be chipped – has turned into a heavy timber construction business.

I started the business in 2021. We our first job was a small 12×16 pavilion. From our initial success we moved to covered bridges and less than year later we were building our first large pavilion. A year after that we were building upscale party barns and event venue locations – specializing in supplying the heavy timber elements.

Now we partner with GCs and builders to deliver exceptional heavy timber elements all over middle TN. We are looking to expand throughout TN.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I first started this business, I was still working another job that took me out to sea for 2-4 months at time. I would have to work my timber framing projects into my vacations when I was home from the high seas. This added a great deal of complexity to the project management side of things. I had to coordinate everything well in advance.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I went to the United States Merchant Marine Academy to learn how to navigate the largest commercial ships around the world. I sailed as an officer aboard many ships all over the world and was involved in cable laying operations, underwater construction, and crude oil transport. When my family began to grow, I realized I wanted to spent my days at home.

I already had developed a passion for timber framing and cultivated it out at sea by reading books and watching YouTube videos when I was not standing a watch. Timber framing relies on mortice and tenon joinery and so I studied the different joints. I bought my first sawmill in 2020 and began timber framing. I have not looked back since.

We specialize in heavy timber construction using mortice and tenon joinery, something not readily available anymore in the age of commercialized building.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Exceptional craftsmanship, durable product, and happy customers. Each one of these elements satisfies an internal desire to help people build structures that will last centuries. One need look no further than the Timber framed structures of the Middle Ages for examples of timber frames build to last.
