Life & Work with Pavani Apsara of Avissawella

Today we’d like to introduce you to Pavani Apsara

Hi Pavani, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
“I grew up surrounded by art, watching my father bring stories to life through illustration. Inspired by his work, I developed a love for storytelling through visuals from an early age. After years of honing my craft, I found my own voice as a children’s book illustrator. Today, I create vibrant, imaginative worlds that captivate young readers, carrying on the legacy of creativity that first sparked my passion.”

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like any creative journey, it hasn’t always been a smooth road. While growing up with an illustrator father gave me inspiration, it also set a high standard that sometimes felt intimidating.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a children’s book illustrator, bringing stories to life with vibrant colors, expressive characters, and a touch of whimsy. My work is known for its warmth, attention to detail, and the way it evokes emotion—whether it’s joy, curiosity, or wonder.
One of the things I’m most proud of is seeing my illustrations spark excitement in children and knowing that my art plays a role in their love for books.
What sets me apart is my deep understanding of storytelling through imagery—perhaps influenced by growing up in a creative household.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Absolutely. The COVID-19 crisis was a challenging time, but it also taught me some valuable lessons. One of the biggest was the importance of adaptability. When the world slowed down, so did many projects, and I had to find new ways to stay creative and connected.
