Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Anthony
Hi Kate, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I fell in to wedding photography entirely by accident, actually. I didn’t even know it was a career options to be honest. While I was working towards my journalism degree I started shooting freelance photojournalism for a handful of local publications. At some point a friend on a tight budget asked me to photograph their wedding despite my having zero experience with weddings (literally hadn’t even attended one!) but they trusted me anyway. Little did I know that trust would catalyst my entire career. Despite the first couple of runs being a bit of a learning curve, I quickly fell in love with the pace and the pressure of wedding days: No do-overs and just about every emotion possible happens in one day. And my inner People Watcher absolutely loves getting to be such a close witness to near perfect strangers’ most intimate days. It’s voyeuristic in a way.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
For the most part! I’d say the hardest parst was figuring out my artistic voice and who my ideal client is. It took some trial and error over the first few years, but I found once I really “leaned in” to only sharing images that spoke to me rather than what was “standard” in the industry, it really helped bring in clients that see the world similarly. Finding your voice as an artist is kind of like finding your personal style. You gotta try on a lot of hats to find what speaks to you, so in the beginning it’s a lot of saying yes to anything and everything, charging very little and just kind of fumbling around in the dark to find the work that sparks joy. Once you find that, you’ve struck gold.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Ninety percent of my work these days is in luxury wedding photography. I specialize in documentary-style photography wherein I gently guide my clients to achieve a casual editorial feel, but with a heavy focus on the candid moments and genuine emotions- moments that spark *feeling.* The other ten percent of my work comes from freelancing as a photojournalist for local publications here and there. I think it’s important to have a bit of variety in your work just to keep your creative spirit from going into autopilot after you’ve been doing it for a while.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
To be a good *documentary* wedding photographer specifically, you absolutely have to be an empath. An innate people-watcher and professional Reader of Rooms if you will. Bonus points if you’re Type B and feel comfortable with little to no structure or expectations but excited by whatever will unfold.
I also think a sense of humor and general curiosity come in to play more than you’d think since there is something so sort of playful about documentary photography in it’s nature.
