Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristina Black

Hi Kristina, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My love for all things beauty began at a young age being surrounded by a lot of makeup, hairspray and big hair. I grew up competing in Texas beauty pageants (my mom was also a pageant director). Getting my hair & makeup done & getting all dressed up was always so much fun for me! I’ve always loved makeup and girly things. I’ve also always had a passion for helping to build confidence in people and making them feel beautiful. I find that enhancing the natural beauty in my clients helps them to shine from the inside. I am very passionate about helping others and I’ve been told it really shows while I’m working with my clients. I am thrilled that I get to do something that I love and enjoy and that I get to share that with others!
I started Southern Luxe Beauty back in 2012 after realizing I could turn my passion into a business. I started working on family & friends and building my kit, working on my skills and expanding my knowledge and eventually that turned into working on photoshoots, red carpet events and my favorite – weddings. For weddings, I curate a team for each wedding based on their location, needs, the timeline, and amount of people requiring services. We enjoy providing luxury services and products to our clients and enjoy hearing each and every client’s story!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I’m from the Dallas metroplex and that’s where I started my business. I eventually met my husband there through a dating app in 2016, and we picked up and moved to Nashville in 2018. This caused me to start all over building my client base in a new city where I knew no one. Luckily – Nashville is a HOT SPOT for weddings, elopements, bachelorettes, and all types of fun events! This helped me grow much faster than I anticipated. Then, the Covid-19 pandemic hit, which took a wrecking ball to the entire wedding and makeup artist industry. 2020 was a tough year not only for me, but for almost every makeup artist & hairstylist. 2021 came and things started to improve & pick up some, thankfully! And now, my business is doing better than ever! We have booked weddings in Florida, North Carolina, Kentucky, Virginia, and Mexico! Definitely was not an easy road but I can’t complain too much!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We specialize in enhancing your natural beauty. Bringing our client’s inner glow to life and highlighting all of their amazing features! We stock luxury products and help them to feel at ease while they relax and get pampered. We come to their location with a fully stocked kit of whatever we may need, including a makeup chair and professional lighting. We don’t allow them to leave the chair unless they are 100% satisfied with the final look! I bring a fun energy, great music and bubbly personality so that all of our clients feel comfortable and happy.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Knowledge is power! Take the classes, learn as much as you can before you take a brush to someone’s skin or hair. Someone is trusting you to make them feel nice and look great. Make sure you know what you’re doing and have a gentle touch. Know your worth and make sure your pricing reflects that! Always be kind, leave the bad moods and drama at home, and always dress appropriately.
