Exploring Life & Business with Ryan Holding of Passage Kava Lounge

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Holding

Ryan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always believed that socializing shouldn’t require alcohol. After managing a 24/7 kava bar in Florida and seeing the power of a safe, relaxed space, I knew there was a better way. I envisioned a haven where friends could connect over delicious, handcrafted kava, mocktails, and more—a place that felt like stepping into a timeless Victorian library without the need to dress up. That vision came to life as Passage Kava Lounge at the East Nashville/Madison line once I moved to Nashville.

With dark green walls, wood wainscoting, and crystal chandeliers, every detail was designed to invite calm and inspire connection. Today, Passage isn’t just a lounge; it’s the perfect hangout. For many, that means sitting with a group of friends they met here, sharing laughs, enjoying our drinks for hours, and even throwing in a few card games to keep the good vibes flowing. I always say that a typical bar is where you go to meet friends in a room full of strangers, but you go to Passage to meet stranger that become a room full of friends. Although we’ve been opened only 7 months, we already received 2nd place in “Best of Nashville” “Best New Business”. This was an incredible honor, and we are so excited to see where we go from here.

We host a variety of events—from trivia nights and karaoke to live music—that transform our space into a dynamic community hub. I’m proud that Passage has become a place where you can relax, focus on your passions, and create unforgettable memories. It’s been an amazing journey, and I’m grateful to everyone who’s been a part of it.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t exactly been a smooth road. As the only full-service kava bar in Nashville, we faced a lot of challenges—most notably, the city wasn’t sure how to categorize or deal with us. There was nothing to compare us to, and we had very specific needs for our space. We wanted to host live music, offer free parking, and have the flexibility to open early and close late. Finding a location that fit all of that was an ongoing challenge, but we were determined to make it happen. Despite the hurdles, we’re proud to have created a unique space that meets our community’s needs and offers a one-of-a-kind experience.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Passage Kava Lounge?
At Passage Kava Lounge, we’re redefining the way people connect. We offer a special retreat where quality and community come first. Our specialty? Handcrafted kava that’s more than just a drink—it’s an experience. We transform this ancient beverage into a creative art form, and we’re passionate about supporting local talent and products along the way. In addition to our handcrafted kava, we offer a variety of refreshing drinks including teas, mocktails, kombucha, and more, ensuring there’s something for everyone to enjoy. We are open every day of the year from 8AM – 2 AM including holiday!

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Taking risks has always been a part of following big dreams. When I opened Passage Kava Lounge, I knew it was a risk—especially in a city that is largely dominated by alcohol-based bars. Creating a nonalcoholic space felt like swimming against the current. But once we opened, I saw the value of that risk unfold. It wasn’t just sober people who were drawn to our lounge—it became a welcoming, community-oriented space for all types of people looking for something different. Everyone, regardless of their lifestyle choices, wanted a place to connect, have fun, and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere without the pressure of alcohol. This experience solidified my belief that sometimes the biggest risks lead to the most rewarding outcomes, especially when you’re creating something that’s as much about community as it is about the product.
