Conversations with Jossy Maness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jossy Maness

Hi Jossy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hello and thank you for having me!

I got my start almost 11 years ago in the beauty industry. As a 19 year old straight out of hair school, I had my heart set on working under the best in Nashville, which led me to a salon and mentor that paved the way for me to fuse my passion of behind the chair, and freelance hair and makeup.

I was lucky enough to catch the eye of Melanie Shelley who owned the salon I spoke of above Trim. I always say find someone you look up to and study how it is they got to where they are. She not only gave me a platform to thrive within salon life, but set life as well. Which I was lucky enough to assist her with for years and ended up getting signed to the agency she is with here in Nashville, AMAX talent agency.

My career path has led me into rooms I’ve always dreamed of being in. I have been lucky enough to work with artist I have admired for years. From photoshoot’s, music videos, award shows, tv shows, fashion shows, tour life, and house calls for color, cut, and extensions. I am proud to have curated and continue to curate my clientele in the industry.

What I can say is the sky is the limit, and whatever you work for and dream up is possible.
Never stop learning, and you are never to good to assist.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This industry is filled with very high, highs and some decent lows. It is easy to get discouraged or compare yourself to others successes, I struggle with it, we all struggle with it because we care and there is always a “what if” but in way that also fuels me. Sometimes, we need the inspiration and push from others to get our artist brain moving and grooving. I have also learned to embrace the calm and change, even though my body goes what?! No!! Let’s go, I want to do it all! Haha.

So not always a smooth road, and my struggles always seem to come in the form of imposter syndrome, however I’ve come to realize that’s natural in artistry, honor it when it shows up then keep moving.

If you are stuck, that is okay. We can not create all the time or force creativity. But, if you care you will push and recharge and find that spark again. Honor your in-between time, that’s where magic happens.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am freelance hair and makeup artist who also part time still works behind the chair.

I would say I specialize in various fields in the industry. From redheads, to extensions and wigs, to glam that has a theatrical spin to it. I have always loved to dress up and stand out, I like my clientele to reflect that as well. I want people to turn heads when they see something I have put my hands on.

I’m most proud of going on tour for majority of last year. I saw so many amazing places, met so many amazing people, I really got to honor my craft and push my brain to be the most creative it’s ever been. Working with Sierra Ferrell was a bucket list. From stadiums, to theaters to tiny desk! I will cherish 2024 forever, overall it made me a stronger person and artist.

What matters most to you? Why?
How I make people feel. Not just in beauty, but my energy. I try to keep my brand light hearted and empowering. If you know me I love to laugh, I’ll always shower you in nicknames such as Queeeeeenn!! My girl!! I’m a big personality and my goal is to make you smile and feel confident when you take the stage or when you take on life. There is so much going on in the world today that’s disheartening, I hope I’m a bright spot in my clients day. I’m a true girls girl and a guys girl. I want us all to win.
