Elyssia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m a Virginia-based cosmetologist and the owner of Glo Beauty Studio in Newport News, VA where I specialize in creating luxurious, high-quality beauty experiences for my clients. I’ve been a licensed cosmetologist for almost eight years and self-employed for nearly two.

I often call my journey into the beauty industry my ‘beautiful mistake’–what started as a temporary pivot from fashion school became my true passion. Originally, I planned to use cosmetology as a way to support myself through fashion school, but the artistry, transformation, and connection I found behind the chair changed everything. I never went back and I wouldn’t trade this wild, fulfilling tide for anything. Glo Beauty Studio is the embodiment of that passion where I’m able to merge creativity, education, and community to help clients look and feel their absolute best.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to where I am now has been anything but smooth. After stepping away from fashion school, I fell into a deep depression, feeling like every plan I had for myself was falling apart. When I started cosmetology school, I shared my new path with my grandfather, and he made me promise I would finish. Three months later, he passed unexpectedly, and I found myself right back in that dark place.
Not long after, my school shut down without warning. One day we left expecting to return, but that next day never came. I wondered if I should just give up, but it felt like God wouldn’t let me. Each setback seemed to knock the wind out of me, but my faith reminded me there had to be purpose in it all.
Now I see how each of these challenges helped shape me into the woman, stylist, and business owner I am today.

Glo Beauty Studio is more than just a salon–it’s an experience. Located in Newport News, VA, we specialize in luxury hair services, from expert styling to premium hair extensions, all designed to enhance natural beauty and confidence. But beyond the hair, Glo is about transformation, empowerment, and community.
What sets it apart is the intentionality behind every service. I take pride in creating a space where clients feel seen, valued, and truly cared for no matter their background or hair texture. Whether it’s dimensional blonding, an extension install, or just a moment to breathe in a busy life, Glo is a place where beauty and well-being go hand in hand.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of the trust and relationships built with my clients. Glo is not just about looking good–it’s about feeling your best, inside and out. What was your favorite childhood memory?
Some of my favorite childhood memories are from Saturdays at the hair salon. It was always a memorable experience. There was such a strong sense of community–women gathered not just for hair but for connection. The salon often felt like a group therapy session, filled with stories, wisdom, and laughter that spilled out the doors, Sometimes there was even singing and dancing, moments so full of joy that they’ve stayed with me to this day. Looking back, I realize those experiences shaped the way I see beauty–not just as a service, but as a space for community, confidence, and shared moments of joy.
